Hi my in laws have a year old Dobermann who has started being destructive when they leave her. We have always used a crate for Jasper at night and we are out of the house. Would they be able to start using one for her? Any ideas how you go about start using one with an older dog? Thank you

We didn't start crating Tau until she was over a year. We just wanted to come home to a house with contents! Whenever we leave her we make sure she gets a really cracking treat, so its a huge bonus for her. We actually have to shut her crate when we're home otherwise she jumps in in expecting a treat!

It may take a little longer than it would from a pup but its definately not too late.

As Sleeping-Lion says giving them a treat or a Kong is the way to go, CJ also will rush to his crate if i say I`m going out cos he knows he gets a bonio or two

They need to start the Dobie off slowly, pop her in for a few mins with a biscuit (or whatever they use as treats), then let her out, lengthen the time she`s left in there, eventually she`ll come to see it as a haven, a place for her to go when she needs a break :D

When I got my last foster dog, Bonnie I was warned that she could nick things so at 16 months I started crate training her.

TBH, she did hate it at first, and really did not want to go in, but I persevered at fed her in there, and after a week or so she would happy trot straight in there when I opened the door.
