4 days ago we adopted a 6 month old puppy. He can go through the night without a wee but during the day needs to go every hour. He pretty much lived outside before we got him so could pee anywhere.

How can we get him to ‘go’ less?

You need to "Stretch" him slowly, make him wait just a little longer each time. The control is muscular, so like many things it's about building the muscles. This can so often be a problem with summer pups. The back door is open all day so pup goes in and out at will, never learning about control until the winter comes and the door is closed. Don't try to stretch it too far to start with, remember that he is still a puppy so naturally does not have the control of an adult.

Ok, so instead of pre-empting by taking him out we should keep him in and watch for signs? And then if he has an accident do we just calmly put him outside so he knows to do it outside?

If he goes indoors then you have stretched it too long. You see, the problem is, we don't know what went on before. If he was kept outside and never needed to control himself then literally you are starting from day one. The fact that he can go through the night suggests that he can control himself. So if he does not control himself then that suggests that he has simply not learned the need to control himself and needs to go right back to basics.

Yeah he’s def back to basics on everything. Bless him. Nights are a mare at the mo too. Hopefully it won’t be long before he settles.
