With thoughts of the new season ahead, we did some steadiness training with Rowan at the weekend. I sat her up at the peg whilst we launched dummies towards us, so that they came down just a few yards away. For a bit more excitement I took pot-shots at them with a .410. My wife then sent Honey for the retrieves whilst Rowan and I watched on. There was no running in at all, I was very pleased. :D The next test will be with my pal’s spaniel in the same set-up. :?

Our keeper gave us a dead poult, that had died in the night, which we hid in cover for the dogs to find. Acer had been watching the morning’s activity with increasing interest and excitement, so we gave her a couple of retrieves, which she picked with no hesitation. I hope she enjoyed it because it’s the last one of those she’s going to have until we shoot some pigeons together next summer. Some pictures …

Rowan showing how it’s done.

Acer's turn - Strong outrun (she is fast!)

A bit of work required on the technique!

Better

Good job the whole exercise hadn’t compromised any steadiness the wife had been working on!!!

Gorgeous photos John as always :D .

The only "game" Spice has had so far is fledglings that have fallen out of their nests  . It's not something I tend to do very early though. I expect her first proper game will be when I take her along to the shoot to socialise and I generally steal things off the game cart for the pups to retrieve  .

That last picture of your three girls is a real credit to you. They look so wonderfully focused and well. Love little Acer's paws up and ready for action :D
