Hi,

Our vet for some reason only gives the first vaccination jab at 9wks. I'd wrongly assumed it would all equal out and Lotti would still be fully vacinated and able to go out for her first walk at 12 wks, but it turns out we have to wait until 13wks :( Was really looking forward to our first walk next week :(

I'm worried about the lost time re socialisation/experiences. We've taken Lotti lots of places in our arms, but it's not quite the same. Plus she's getting a bit too heavy for me to carry very far.

Also her exercise quota will increase to 15mins twice a day from Sunday (12wks) and I'm not sure how to fill this time. Currently we do two training sessions of 10mins - sit, stay, lay, off, take, come, etc. I plan to start working on heel - though all early attempts haven't gone well as she's too treat focused, and ends up eating my hand/jumping up at me.

I've attached a pic below, although it's a couple of weeks old. I need to get another joint one - but they're refusing to both sit still at the same time while I take the photo (obviously they do it no problem when I haven't got a camera in my hand :) ) Lotti is 11.5wks and Ben is approx 6yrs (ex-resuce he came to us at 1yr).

Any ideas of how to make best use of the time, and any tips on how to teach heel to a great white shark in minature greatly appreciated :)

Can not see the pic :(

What your doing is fine carrying Lotti everywhere with you

does your vet do puppy parties as some let them go after their 1st vaccine.

Do you know anyone that has any fully vacccinated dogs that lotti can mix and play with.

You can start to lead train Lotti in your garden.

My vets do jabs at 8 weeks and 12 weeks too, then a week on top of that before they say you can take them out. However mine will have been out long before that, in fact she has already been for a couple of tiny on lead walks, just around the estate on the pavements. I feel the need for socialisation outweighs the tiny risk of the pup catching something from the pavement. So about a week after that first jab, I start taking them out, mostly carried but often put down just for a few yards, to get them used to it. I stick to low dog traffic pavemented areas though and I don't let the pup on grass verges where other dogs toilet.

Hi,

Thank you for the advice. Sorry it has taken so long to reply, took a while for me to sort out the subscription, and to learn how to upload photos. Have attached a photo below, and there is some more info/photos of my labs under 'time to stop lurking' in the intro section - thought it was time I said hello formally :)

Our vet kind of does puppy parties, but not all the time, and they may be on hold while the person goes on holiday, but I'm waiting to hear back and if there is one, we'll be there :)

Strangely enough we don't know that many fully vaccinated dogs - one or two possibly but trying to find one that isn't too old for a bouncy puppy, and that will be nice and not snap/growl at her for no good reason is proving difficult. Will keep thinking.....

We've had Lotti out and about in our arms, but being first time puppy owners are overly cautious about putting her down. But we're going to see if we can take her to a friend's garden this weekend - dog free and a different environment. She does spend time in our gardens, and has got use to all the sounds and textures, etc. I started lead training a few weeks ago, but I think the key will be teaching her 'heel' - at the moment I'm just not allowing her to pull on the lead (ie the concept that pulling means we don't go that way), which is working-ish. Heel training so far with a treat gets her too excited and treat focused to walk forward.

Thank you, Ruby
