Weve had Jess for a little while now and she so far has been a model puppy. She sleeps right through the night with no messing or crying in her crate. Is eating well and has easily picked up all her basic commands such as sit, lay, up, wait and paw. Were now working on her recall (so far so good) when shes off the lead she generally sticks to me anyway and doesn't like to venture too far away from us. Shes getting lots of socialisation with both my sisters and my mums puppies and my bosses older dog (a Vizla) on a daily basis.

We have 2 small problems....

1. She has developed a cough since yesterday - she is fine in herself. Just seems to have a little cough and then seems like she wants to be sick and gags but there is nothing there ? Is this the starting of Kennell cough ? Im going to get her looked at tomorrow just in case but is there anything I can do to help her for today ? Any home remedies recommended or anything I should avoid until then ?

2. She follows me everywhere - If were on the sofa and she's asleep and I leave the room she will wake up and follow me (sometimes Im only going to the loo or to get tea !) But she gets up staright away. I really dont want to have to make her go in her crate for sleeps so that she stays undisturbed. I then come sit straight back down and she wants to lay back down again !!

Other than that shes a wonderful puppy - Its been 2 months and I cant imagine life without her !!! :D

When Cadbury started his kennel cough it sounded like he was gagging and retching and he would bring up froth.

The vet just gave him some antibiotics and said to get him some benylil cough syrup and because he was a big boy (he was about 6 months then) to give him a tsp of it just about every time I looked at him!

You can also give honey I believe.

Can't help with the attachment thing since Cadbury is only being just allowed to roam a bit more freely in the house (the cat has taken a dislike to him).

It sounds very like KC Laura, if it is it`ll be no more walks for at least 3 weeks and please tell your sister and boss in case their dogs get it too.

Sadly its all too easy to pick up these days as it seems to be rife and being airborne it can travel a long way.

See the vet asap but tell them that you suspect KC so they can see Jess separately amd minimise the possibility of her passing it to other youngsters and oldies who may both be more affected than a fit healthy adult.

As Jess is still a pup herself you`ll need to keep a close eye on her, I imagine the vet may give AB`s to help shift it, they may not, thankfully I`ve not had it among my two but have read on hear that people give children`s benelyn to help ease the coughing.

As for the following you about mine still do that with me at times, try telling her to stay as you rise and again as you go past her, don`t worry about her resting though, she`ll be doing that while your sitting, she just wants to know where your going and why she can`t come to

It does sound like the start of kennel cough unfortunately. If you're taking her to the vet, make sure you keep her in the car until it's her turn to be seen. If it's confirmed, the vet will let you know about isolation etc - there's a high chance your sister's pup will have it too if it does turn out to be KC

Home remedies - I know you can give them kid's Benylin but I'm not sure which one, try a search on here for 'Benylin'. Otherwise, honey melted into boiling water and left to cool can work wonders, apparently. It works for me, anyway

As for the following - Indy is exactly the same. Unless she's utterly exhausted and fast asleep, she follows me everytime I leave the room. I just let her get on with it - Jess will eventually get the message that a) you're not leaving her and b) you're not doing anything exciting. Indy is 17 weeks and is only just starting to not follow me every time I get up!!

She's a dalidor, isn't she? She's very pretty :)

sorry I clicked on your link in error , your puppy looks lovely, I have had no experience of kennel cough , but I hope if it is this , she will soon be back to her normal self, it is a worry . My pup Max is 8 ½ months old and follows me everywhere as well , he even waits outside my bedroom door, but this doersn't concern me , its nice to know , but its a different matter when walking in the park he's not bothered then , he would much rather play with his four legged friends, good luck and keep us updated

As a young puppy I would definitely recommend you take her to the vet. Generally in a fit adult Kennel Cough is no real problem, but in the young and old it can be serious. There are other things it can be, including some very serious. (Not that I think so in this case, but it must always be born in mind.)

As to following you around, yep, it's what puppies do! It will get easier, in that you begin to not notice so much.

AS the others have said, get her to the vet - but, assuming that won't be until tomorrow, you could give her some honey, I always keep a squeezy bottle here - touch wood, usually for scratched throats (I own horror bags  ) - but a little is very soothing.

You have the best advice already, but to it does also sound like KC to me, Twix had it last year and got AB's, she recovered well and she is 13.

Jana never caught it thankfully but I do hope Jess is better soon, as others say, mention to the vet you think it may be KC as my vet came out to the car as to not infect any other dogs :(

Honey in the water from boiled up liquorice root is recommended for kc - along with ABs from the vet if deemed necessary. I doubt you have any liquorice root lying around but you should be able to buy it from a health food store.

Definitely agree with the advice to let the vet know you think she may have KC and not take her into the waiting room as you normally would.

As for the following around, yes, tis normal :)

Hope she's feeling better soon.

Hi

I ahve to say taht it sounds exactly like KC, Bramble had it when he was about 4 months old and although the vet gave him AB's I didn;t think they helped at all - what did was giving him honey - I just let him lick it off the spoon, he very soon realised that it made his throat feel better...

Honey was definitely what helped Bramble the most...

Hope she is better soon.

As for the following around - enjoy!!!! I love mine following me everywhere - sometimes it gets quite farcicial with two of them following me in tandem! But I absolutely love it, I think it is one of the best things about living with dogs!

Maybe I'd just sad..... Oh! And Neo loves lying on my feet where he is now....yep definitely a trait to encourage!

Thank you so much for the replies - No benylin in the cupboards but honey I can do, so will try that and wait for the vets tomorrow. Thanks for recommending letting the vets know in advance - I probally would of just walked in and forgot all about. Fingers crossed its not that then 8O

Im glad everyone thinks the following is not to much to worry about - I was worried I was encouraging her into some sort of weird attachment !!

Yes Milford she is indeed a dalidor - I fell in love with her @ 1st sight ! I think shes pretty cute too ! :D
