Hi all,

My Reuben is poorly again!

A couple of weeks ago, he started having very soft mucousy poo, with a bit of blood in. Off to the vets we went, and he was given Pro-Kolin and Salazopyrin, and told to feed a bland diet of chicken and rice. After about 4 days he started to get better, but in the meantime the vets did a test on 3 days of poo samples. These came back clear of any nasties.

His poos started firming up, so we started adding back kibble. Around the same time, he finished his course of Salazopyrin. A couple of days later, his poo started to get soft again, and then a day later he vomited once. Next day he vomited again and had very soft stools. He also went off his food for that morning, but was very hungry later on in the day and seemed upbeat and perky. Don't know if it's from the kibble or the salazopyrin being finished, or something else entirely. He's been on the same kibble for about 5 years.

We took him to the vet later that day, because his stool was still soft and he was lethargic in the morning. Vet took bloods and have said to stick to chicken and rice and have prescribed omeprazole. Bloods have come back fine, white blood cells are fine, everything looks normal from the comprehensive test they did. I asked to test for pancreatitis and they said he was borderline on the result, but they are not convinced that is what he has.

Last night (the day after starting the omeprazole) he was asking to go out several times in the middle of the night with urgent diarrhea. I've asked the vet if the omeprazole could cause this...they don't think so, but I have read that a rare side effect is diarrhea. They want me to still keep giving it to him, but I have to admit to being hesitant. Even when his stool was soft before, he never had the urgent need to go poo...he would go at his regular times. This urgent diarrhea is different.

Vet has now prescribed a short course of Prednidale tablets, plus Noroclav and to carry on with Pro Kolin and feed only chicken and rice, as they can't rule out an allergy. They are leaning towards a diagnosis of colitis or inflammatory bowel disease.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom or supportive words, as I'm pulling my hair out. Poor pup has been ill for about 2 weeks, and I'm so worried he will not get better. I'm so convinced the omeprazole has made him worse, because he had soft poos for nearly 2 weeks, then the day after he has the omeprazole he has urgent diarrhea.

Just looking for any sort of advice or well wishes of any kind. :D

Many thanks

I really do feel for you.Martha has irritable bowel ,so I know where you are coming from.Martha had all the symptoms you mention. She had Giardia, campliobyactor. But your dog has come back clear. The trouble is Martha eats lots of dog poo,and Human.Disgusting habits I know.We have coped with Slippery Elm and a Prebiotic Powder, which sorts out the diahorrea.I am not saying it will help your dog,but its saved Martha.Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Lucan was diagnosed with IBD several years ago now, his main symptom has always been vomiting and weight loss, but all dogs are different and it affects them in different ways. The only way to get a definite diagnosis of IBD is by biopsy so all the non invasive tests are usually done first.
For what it's worth Lucan can not tolerate Omeprazole, it makes him very, very sick, as in throwing up, he takes Ranitidine instead which works well along with a hydrolyzed diet.
These problems can be really frustrating to get to the bottom of. I hope you find some answers soon.
