Hiya,

Welcome !

It might help you to copy / paste your post to ' Labrador Breeders ' forum.... 3/4 down forum page, as specialists in that field will look there first.
By just copying and not ' cutting ' you will still be able to enjoy replies from other members here.

Sorry Tracy. Labradors come in three colours. Black, chocolate or liver, or thirdly yellow. Never Golden. This dates back to the days when the Labrador people were trying to get recognition from the Kennel Club. At that time, another retriever breed was also on the point of gaining recognition, the Golden Retriever, and the KC, in it's wisdom decided that in order to avoid the confusion of having a Golden Retriever and a Golden Labrador Retriever decreed that the colour of the Labrador would be known as Yellow. The US actually carried this over from our breed standard when compiling their own breed standard.

Hi Tracy :)
I seem to remember joining this same discussion all those months ago when you were discussing mating her. It was my baptism of fire into labforums :D I thought I was going to get banned :D . Seriously, I don't know why your papers say golden, but if you check out the KC breed standard it is yellow.
With regards to advice, while the internet and books are very useful, although it's quite late in the day, it may be worth approach a local breeder for advice and so you have someone on hand locally in case of an emergency.

You mean you bin arguin colours Jenny? I thought it was only me who did that! I must admit it is a pet hate of mine. One vet had the termerity to list the colour of my old Mandy as "Honey" on her Vac certificate! He never made the same mistake on any more of my dogs!

Do you know that in the 8 years that I have had Sasha, this is the first time I have ever come across this fact. I have called her a Golden labrador ever since we got her, even though like you say, the KC say she is in fact yellow.

Does it really matter anyway... Sasha is half and half anyway lol.

Hi,

I can see how in convo it can be confusing as Labrador / Golden Retriever / Labrador retriever etc............but as you say KC papers would read Yellow.....

Some may not consider it important but I do. Our breed has been around a long time and I like to do it the honour of calling it by the correct name. Pedantic I might be but there it is. Exactly the same thing applies to people who call Golden Retrievers "Retrievers". How on earth is anyone expected to know, out of all the retriever breeds, what exactly they are referring to? I believe it is important to use the correct title, particularly if you are breeding them! At least it then it doesn’t look as if you do not even know the very first thing about the breed.

Hi John

I agree with you about calling YELLOW yellow. If i do se an advert in the local paper selling pups it's the first thing i comment on when i see Golden labs for sale, my reaction is they do not know much about labs.

John and Thrupence,

Totally agree with you, like you thrupence, on seeing these ads, I always wonder about the whole set up! And worry about weakening lines.......

LOL Elle, but some might say she`s Liver!!  , although if I saw liver for sale as dark as CJ, I`d be a bit worried about its quality I think.
