Hi,

I've been meaning to join here since I got my black lab puppy a month and a half ago but just getting round to it because he keeps me so busy! My name's Derek, i'm from Scotland but live in the Durham area. My black lab is called Dexter, he is now just over 4 and a half months old. I've attached a few photos :)

He's been really good, lovely natured dog and he gets on well with other dogs. He can be a bit stand-offish with new people until he sniffs them out and gets to know them. I have a crate for him when he is unsupervised which he has taken to a lot. Took him for a vet check recently and he was in perfect health, the vet loved him and he loved the vet cos she gave him treats :) The only problem i'm really having is on walks he can pull at the lead sometimes especially when he sees another dog. He absolutely loves the water and when I bathed him he loved it and didn't want to get out. Can't wait until the summer and I can get him out swimming!

I'm unsure whether or not to get him neutered as it won't be long until he hits that age. Would you recommend that I get this done?

Hi Derek - welcome to LF.

We are not far from you - we live in Sunderland, and Monty was bred in Spennymoor.

Dexter is a beautiful boy.

Regarding neutering - I think you need to do a little bit of research, as well as discussing with your vet what would be the best time to have this done. Opinions are varied - and there is currently evidence that neutering at a very early age can be linked with joint problems and some forms of cancer. There are a number of articles you can find on the internet - this is just one of them

I'd wait till he is about 18 months old = fully developed :)

Thanks for your help :)

I'm happy with your answers because I wasn't very comfortable about him going under the knife at such a young age!

Jazz, Dexter was bred just outside of Crook in County Durham.

Cheers
Derek

Hello and welcome to LF. Hubby works in the Durham area and have family in Crook. Dexter looks a super little pup. I wouldn't rush into neutering him and wait till he's mature.
