This thread is also known as Eve's dastardly and cunning plan!!!

It seems from the recent rash of threads posted about varying difficulties with our dogs going off their food, being fussy and generally not eating, that quite a few of us have non eating dogs - and as you may know Bramble is now 10 months old and has never eaten properly...

I think it is safe to say that all of us have been following intently the terrible traumas associated with Jades whelping, one thing that caught my eye was the point where Jade stopped eating and things that Di had done to try to persuade her to eat - something that all of us who have had to contend with a dog that does not want to eat can readily empathise with.

And Jules' reply and suggestion...really made me think - about Bramble - as you know I am always on the look out for any suggestions that may help me to get him to eat properly... Jules said

Have you got any Sorb Vit B to give her ( http://www.animal-health.co.uk/eMerchantPro/pc/viewcategories.asp?idCategory=33 ), as I know a few people who have used this for dogs and horses to improve their appetites and it works wonders?
At that my ears pricked up - improve appetite? Off I went to have a look... the website said...

Sorb Vit B is also wonderful for geriatrics and general debility, weight loss, shy and nervous dogs etc.
I thought it sounded promising - very promising - so ordered some....that was yesterday - it arrived this morning (hows that for service?!) too late for breakfast unfortunately BUT the blurb on the packet said

A rapid tonic for weight gain, PICKY ANIMALS...
my capitals.....

I now have high hopes! Very high hopes!!!! Of course everything else I ahve tried has failed and there is nothing to say that this will work any better - but nothing ventured...

I thought I would share this so if anyone else wants to give it a go and see whether it helps their dog - I know how desperate I get so if this does help or gives someone the chance of trying something - its worth it

And of course a great big thank you to Jules who brought this to my attention in the first place!!! I shall be so thrilled and delighted if it works...

Bramble has been eating now for a couple of days - with persuasion and he is looking better - even though I over fed him the other day and gave him the runs...

Here is Bramble on 13 Sept - as you can see looking very thin

Here is he on 25th Sept - photo is blurry but I think you can see that he is looking better

And one tonight as a starter for this new regime...well until he turns his nose up!

I think he now looks significantly better thin but better - but we have been here before and then he refuses to eat - so first dose of tonic tonight....fingers crossed!

Hope this is of some help to someone!

Actually Sheila I think what he is saying is

" I'm cold and wet and hungry...will you quit faffing around with the camera and get me inside and fed!"

He had a lot of exercise today and was hungry - still played me up food wise but gave in quicker and ate 'cos he was hungry..

Fingers well and truly crossed!

Hi Eve

Hope it works and if so I will be buying some!

I have two skinny dogs, one has an excuse but the other doesn't (hopefully not). He is the same age as Bramble and has the same 'look'.
When is Bramble's birthday? Logie is 22 November 2007.

Bramble is gorgeous and certainly looks like he is growing well enough!

Sorry Eileen Bramble was born on 7th November 2007

Thank you for your kind comments about him - he is quite lovely (not that I am biased at all :D ) and I am sure with a bit more meat on the bones would be stunning!!!

Lets hope we can get these pups sorted -will keep you updated!

Oh Eve....Why didn't I think to mention it before  .

We used it with recovering horses or ones that had had a stressful few weeks (travelling showjumpers all over the country puts some of them out a bit), as sometimes they would go off their food. I know people that have given it to sick or recovering dogs too for the same reason. I just never put 2 and 2 together to give it to a Healthy but Picky eater...but looking at those photos...I'm glad YOU did :D .

Bramble is such a handsome young man, although I doubt he'll EVER be Porky. Put it this way, I've seen more Setters that look like him in the first photo, than I have plump ones.....Like Greyhounds, Lurchers and the like, Setters don't seem to do "plump" .

Fingers crossed this works for him Eve..

I don't think we (who haven't been through it) can appreciate how stressful it must be for you..

Chester thankfully was sorted within a matter of days, 3 days not eating, changed food, introduced a morning walk before breakfast, and he has never turned his nose up since, but even in those 3 short days, I was stressed.. I can't imagine what it must be like long term..

I really hope this works!! and you can see a difference in those pics, in just a short time.... and a lovely fushcia plant in the background!! (if thats what it is! I noticed it, as mum and dad just came back from holiday, and whilst I was looking after the cats, I forgot to water it, and she wasn't happy! ha

Fingers crossed for you :) x

Oooh Eve, really hope this works for Bramble. It must so frustrating with him being so picky and not eating.

Emma was like this alot as a youngster, used to drive me nuts and of course such a worry but she did grow out of it eventually.

Lots of ~~~~~eating vibes~~~~~ on their way to Bramble.

Well day 1 now over - and to be honest don't quite know what to make of it all....

On the negative side the Sob VitB has the dreaded E nos - E 102 and E135 don;t know about E135 but I know ALL about E102...so I am not desperately happy about that ....

Last night Bramble had 10ml (they say the max is 15ml), tea was as per usual BUT it was all eaten again :D

For breakfast and tea today Bramble has had 5ml making the 10. For breakfast no real difference, like yesterday same shenanigans BUT again it was all eaten :D :D

Tonight! Well!!! It was amazing - a different dog! He could hardly contain himself, I have literally NEVER seen him attack food like he did tonight, but this is Bramble we are talking about...and he did manage to stop to ensure he got second helpings of his lamb stuff  but he resumed his meal with gusto...no encouragement no sweet talking no nothing - except dessert! They expect dessert if Bramble eats!!!!

To say I am delighted is the biggest understatement I think I ahve ever made! He looks better and I will try in a few days to get and post an updated photo so you can see whether it has made any difference, but he feels like he has more covering over his ribs and his coat is just wonderful!!!

BUT and there is a but - his behaviour this morning was not good and this evenings was worse... now I am NOT saying that it is the supplement that has caused/contributed but there is a doubt there...

Some weeks ago a silly man spooked Bramble by leaving his hydraulic lorry on whilst going up and petting him and since then Bramble has been afraid of men (I am now posting separately about this) but today things took a turn for the worse...

We went for our walk by the river so familiar territory - there was a fisherman at the start (new developoment there but he has seen fishermen before) and he barked his head off... further up there was another fisherman and we had the same performance, put the lead on and this man (bless him) let us come near and tried to make friends, but Bramble wasn;t having any of it,

There were a couple of male visitors this afternoon and Bramble was fine with them...

This evening - fine with the fishermen who were STILL there 8O but he was on the lead, scared but silent of a chap walking his dog... and was not going to let this man pet him - not aggressive just kept backing away no growling no nothing... then a jogger got the barking treatment but Bamble was happy to let him make friends once he was on the lead...

He was also jumping up at people which he generally hasn't for some time... and one man unwittingly made things worse for me by yelling at Bramble so I am sure that is going to reinforce the thought that men are big scary things....

So now I don;t know what to do.... he had the supplement tonght but if this anti-social behaviour continues I shall have to stop it and see if that is the cause/making it worse as I REALLY REALLY don't want that behaviour ingrained

Don't know if any one has any ideas - but on the eating front I would say a major success!!

Well I'm REALLY pleased that he has found his appetite, which I suppose proves that he was missing something in his diet....but what a bugger that it has Tartrazine in  . Having had a Hyper Active child who with one sniff of Tartrazine would be Mr Mega-Angry for days, I would think that this colouring could well be your problem with Bramble.

That coupled with the extra energy from the food that Bramble is now eating, could explain his unpredictable behaviour.

All I can suggest is that you take a look at the list of vitamins and minerals in the Sorb VitB and see if you can get another Multivit supplement with a similar content...just without the nasty colouring. Brewers Yeast is a good source B Vitamins....and I'm sure you can get Brewers Yeast tablets for dog. B12 is the vitamin that improves the appetite, so if nothing else it would be worthwhile just getting him on some of that.

I can't find anything on E135....Well certainly no research to say it causes behavioural or any other problems.

Oh well done! What a difference between the pics. And what a handsome lad.

Could there be other factors to blame for Bramble's behaviour? A change of routine? More men encountered on your walks than usual? Clutching at straws here but it sounds like its having a really positive effect on his appetite and would be such a shame if it makes him anti-social.

Best of luck. Will be watching with interest.

Day 2 Update!!!

WEll I may have been a little hasty in worrying that the behaviour may ahve been due to the E102 (Jules I also had a child that became the demon from hell after a whiff - I used to dread childrens parties!) because this mornings walk (we did not get an evening one due to going over to see my father) was entirely different...

I chose a different location but one with the dreaded fishermen - he ignored them :D . As we set off Bramble on lead, there was a man on a seat with a rat on a rope - Bramble ignored them both, even when let off lead right in front of the bloke (risky, but I HAD to know!).

We were followed by a couple - Bramble ran up to the chap and barked twice - bloke ignored that but put his hand down to say "hi", I apologised called Bramble off and he returned (that pup has one good recall I will say that for him!), only to run back to the chap - this time silently thank god for another fuss...

We then saw a chap with 5 dogs Bramble ignored the chap and socialised nicely with the dogs. Then another couple again no noise socialised nicely with their dogs...

Finally - and boy am I chuffed! - we came across a working party of male volunteers managing the country park - I nearly died, Bramble ran up and said hello to most of them - silent friendly and sociable...

So a tad hasty and panicky I think....today has been good... I do wonder whether it was because i gave him 10ml Friday night and kindof OD'd him on the E102..since then I have given him 5ml morning and evening ...

I did notice last night he was lying quietly by my side as indeed he has done tonight...

Food front - this morning he wasn't going to play - but I gave him a bit of kibble by hand and was nice and encouraging and he ate most, so I topped up with more lamb stuff, most went and another handful of lamb stuff nearly all gone this time with an egg for dessert....

Tonight no encouragement needed and it almost all went at the first sitting... tuna for dessert tonight!!!

So after 2 and a half days I reckon we have an improvement....certainly going to carry on and thanks Jules for the idea about the B12 I may well have a look and see if I can buy some separately - but on todays evidence I think he is doing well even with the dreaded E102!!!!

Thanks all of you for your support - and for those watching this with dogs that are difficult to feed - well I would say its worth a try on the initial evidence...

Excellent news, my understanding is that there is no tablet as yet for dogs for b12 as it is very poorly absorbed in the GI tract, it comes as an injection only.

The human version of B12 tablet has only been on the market a short while and you need blood to ensure you do not have an antibody which will prevent it being absorbed. So 90% of pts who are B12 deficient are on injections.

Hope barmble continues to improve.

More Piccies please

Well week 1 now over!!!

Qualified success I would say....

Photo will be posted tomorrow - could not take one tonight as it was too dark when we got back from our walk...

No repetition of the bad behaviour at all I am relieved to say, my personal feeling is that this was the sudden large ingestion of E102 but 2 smaller doses he seems able to cope with... currently he is lying by me completely akip! So no hyper behaviour there....

Bramble has eaten fairly consistently all week - BUT I ahve mixed grated cheese with the kibble in all except one meal - and the one meal I didn;t he refused point blank. So I am not sure whether it is the supplement or the cheese or a combination of both that has given us this huge improvement.

Quantities have been increased as he was eating all his food without too much of a battle and he definitely seems hungrier and more ready to eat in the evening, mornings he is not so interested but evenings I would say taht there is a noticeable change.

Took him to be weighed on Wednesday - last time he was weighed was probably 3 weeks plus ago, admittedly we did have a fairly severe non eating patch since which probably contributes if not explains the result - BUT he had only gained 150g which is nothing.

So the jury is still out but definite signs of improvement and it is a real joy to see him eat...

Currently I still think that it is worth trying because there has been a definite improvement...I am keeping my fingers crossed for next weeks weigh in...
