Hi

My name is Davo and I have a 4 month old black lad called Guinness. Have found the website a great source of information over the last month or so, so thought it was about time I introduced my dog.

Guinness is first and foremost a family pet but I am also training him as a Search and Rescue Dog being a member of my local mountain rescue team. There is around 3 years of hard slog ahead to (hopefully) qualify as a fully trained dog and handler but at the moment I am just working on obedience and games of hide and seek ( which is how the training starts off). He loves socialising with all the adult dogs and handlers, and generally doing the things lab puppies normally do ( read - chewing, eating, playing and barking!).

It is the first time I have had a lab so I will be asking you all for hints and tips along the way, photos to follow shortly!

Hi Davo

Welcome to the forum!

Which mountains do you patrol? I'm in Scotland, so plenty of them up here and the mountain rescue do a great job (I've heard tales of people having to be rescued after walking up Ben Nevis in flip flops and getting into problems :x - I've done the walk up to half way and can't believe people think it's going to be an easy stroll!).

Can't wait until our pup is old enough to go on long walks up the hills - he's only 3 months at the moment so still a bit of a wait until next year when he'll be old enough to come on our mountain hikes ... he's going to pull me up I think!

Good luck with the training! :D

Hi Karen

Enjoyed looking at Corbie's photos, looks a lovely puppy.

Main area my rescue team team cover is the Brecon Beacons down in South Wales. We are a very busy team and have around 50 emergency callouts a year.

You were right about 'The Ben', catches a lot of people out that one. I am up in Kinlochleven shortly for a weeks winter training with the Search Dogs. Guinness will not be with me as he is still too young to be spending all day in the mountains :( . Don't think he would appreciate being locked in the car all day! I intend to take him next year however when he will be old enough to take an active part in the training- the big question will then be whether I can keep up with him over the hills
Thanks
Davo

Don't let Corbie's photos fool you - may look cute but contains a lot of mischief!

I spent a week's holiday in south Wales in 2002 and drove through some of the Brecon Beacons area, very picturesque.

Kinlochleven is in a nice area, and the mountains of Glencoe I find awesome, but have yet to get to the top of one. Hopefully there will be some snow for your winter training  But I am guessing that you'll also be in the ice climbing centre they have there?!

We haven't been out on the hills since Corbie's arrival on Boxing Day - saving my energy for next year! I know Guinness will love it when he's old enough to go out with you - I've seen so many labs out on walks up the hills... they could go on forever I think!!

Hi Davo

Your work with Guinness seems fascinating!

I did a lot of my forces training in the Brecon Beacons...lovely location...but very challenging too!

Look forward to hear how Guinness progresses on his training...although I think a few of the people you eventually rescue may be a little disappointed when they hear a dog coming over, and you shouting "Guinness, Guinness" only to check for a barrel around his neck and find nothing!

Hi Davo

Welcome to you and Guiness, what a fantastic name for him!

It's great that you're training Guiness for his search and rescue work and I bet your family love him to bits!

I look forward to hearing more about him and of course seeing some piccies!

All the best,
Nicola.
