Hi

I've been on looking at dog books on amazon and there is just too many! So i thought there is no better place for advice that here!

I'd like a book on building relationships or anything that you think is a must read! I've always had a lab in my life since I was 2 so I'm not new to the scene but he is my first out of my parents house and things are totally different when your the only one to share responsibility and worry!!

Any help is much appreciated!

if you are after a gundog training book i like "training the working retriever" by anthea lawrence, or maybe "the pet gundog" by lez graham.

"in defence of dogs" by john bradshaw is a great read and i liked "inside of a dog" by alexandra horowitz, and john fisher's books are fine too. there are others in the same vein, from memory- suzanne clothier? i may have got that name wrong tho.

a bit off piste but "training the working spaniel" by janet menzies is a good read - even though she calls labs "lugubrious" 8O i enjoy her writing and another author i enjoy reading is joe irving (he's a spaniel man too tho).

if you just fancy flicking through a lovely book of photos "labradors, work rest and play" by nick ridley is a lovely book too :)

he also does a spaniel one but i am not allowed to buy that, because if i do, i will end up with a spaniel quicker than you can say jack robinson

The Suzanne Clothier book is 'Bones would rain from the sky'. I liked - In defence of dogs by John Bradshaw and 'Clever Dog: the secrets your dog wants you to know' by Sarah Whitehead. There's also 'Click to Calm' by Emma Parsons but that's more about working with dogs who are either fearful or aggressive for whatever reason still there is a lot on developing a positive bond in it and 'recipes' for how to go about it. There's also a Turgid Ruass book 'On talking terms with dogs' that was an interesting read.

DVD wise I really like Dr Dunbar, Julia Donaldson and Mary Ray.

If you want to read about others bond with their dogs you can't beat Endal, A Puppy Called Aero or Finding Harmony, all three dogs were Canine Partners and changed their owners lives dramatically. :)

I would endorse the previous posters - 'Bones would rain from the sky' and
'Bonding with your Dog: A Trainer's Secrets for Building a Better Relationship" are fabulous books - Victoria Schnade's book made me cry!

if you are looking for a good and fun training manual, the Gun Dog Club's series are brilliant, just as good obedience, never mind gundoggery, and of course John Weller's book is a lovely read!

We were lucky enought to go on a training weekend with John Rogerson, any of his books, but especially the 'Dog Vinci Code' are brilliant too.

Well having received it for Christmas I have finally (after my fall) had time to really absorb the book "Bonding with your dog" by Victoria Schade, it is fabulous. Full of stories of dogs she has worked with and how they solved problems, and lots of different ways of engaging with your dog.

There are so many books out there and only picked this one as it was reccomended on here, and I just want to say a huge thank you and pass on the reccomendation.

I hadn't heard of Bonding with Your Dog before, but just took a look.

Reading: "In this groundbreaking book, professional dog trainer Victoria Schade reveals that a successful relationship between you and your dog isn′t about establishing yourself as the pack leader, but about building a meaningful bond. She explains how this bond forms the core of your entire relationship; ...", I like the sound of it too :D
