Im going to housesit my mums house next week whilst she is on holiday, this technically will be my holiday as well, as its better than staying in my four square walls lol.

Ive got a kindle and would like to download some dog related books/stories to read whilst Im down there with the doglets. Looking for more story related ones that training ones tbh as a bit of a change.

Ive read Marley and me and a couple about a Cavalier called George, Last dog on the Hill etc, anyone got any others that theyve really liked?

Don't know if it is your thing but I really liked Lucy Dillon's Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts and she has a second doggie related book now too called Walking Back to Happiness, which I am reading next. Nice easy reading, which is what I look for these days :)

Endal is a good book imo! It's about the relationship between a lab and a soldier who was injured in the Iraq war.It is written from the veiw of the soldier and the obstacles he has to overcome, and it has the view of his wife and how she deals with life with a disabled husband. Can't remember the name of the soldier but it is a moving true story.

Breeders by Anita Burgh.

A brilliant book that I couldn't put down. Not your normal doggy story but a world of intrigue involving a vet, championship breeder, a puppy farmer and his daughter. Found my copy on ebay.

A couple of books that have recently been published....neither of them are fiction but are both excellent dog related books:

Diary of a Dog Walker: Time spent following a lead
by Edward Stourton

In Defence of Dogs
by John Bradshaw

both available on Amazon

Born to Run by Michael Morpugo, it is about a kidnapped greyhound, a really good read.

Also, Shadow- same author.

June

Edited- thought of another by same author, you will not put this down till you have read it, not about dogs - Running Wild, it is true story about a little boy who was saved from the Tsunami by an elephant, won't say anymore may spoil it, [it is a must read]

Endal is by Allen and Sandra Parton, Allen was in the Navy not the Army but everything else is right, Allen and Endal were members here but Allen hasn`t been in a while.

Sadly Endal went to the Bridge a while ago but his protege EJ (Endal Junior) is helping Allen now.

Also another couple of books I enjoyed are:, Come Back Como by Steven Winn, a true story of a rescue who didn`t actually appear to want to be rescued

Also The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, the package it came in says its a true story but I`m not sure, its written from the dogs point of view and in his "words", he speaks notmally by the way

Not sure if they will be available on kindle but if not look out for a box set of all 3 titled "Heartwarming tales of Man`s best friend", it has a pic of a Lab pup on it :D

Endal is an absolute must read, you are more than welcome to my copy as I was just going to give it to the charity shop, if your interested then PM me yours or your Mums address and I'll pop it in the post along with "Hell on 4 paws" As a bestselling author and owner of the Puppy School franchise, Gwen Bailey is one of the UK's most respected dog behaviour experts and has helped millions to transform their troublesome pets into obedient and happy hounds. So what happened when one of her students - Chesil, the most dysfunctional pooch in Britain - refused to lay down, and he just so happened to be her own dog?! "Hell On 4 Paws" is the witty and wonderful story of how Gwen's life was turned on its head when she took on a new man in her life, his family, and the unruly Chesil, her greatest challenge yet. As if adjusting to a new relationship, new home and new responsibilities wasn't tough enough, Gwen also has to deal with Chesil's bizarre and antisocial behaviour, a constant distraction in her crazy new life. Follow Chesil's amusing exploits as his outrageous personality clashes with Gwen's time-tested techniques, and see him slowly change from an aggressive, possessive nightmare to a proud winner of the Gold Award for good citizenship. A feel-good and inspirational tale for anyone who's ever had trouble raising a rowdy hound, "Hell On 4 Paws" shows that sometimes even the best trainers can encounter problems, and that, with a little persistence, even the worst pets can become compassionate creatures.

Bruce Fogles -
Travels with Macy tells the story of how they went across the USA in a campervan

A Dog Abroad - One man and his dog journey into the Heart of Europe.

Both are available from Amazon but I am not sure whether there is a Kindle version..

I agree with Mary about the Art of Racing in the Rain - a brilliant book!

I have just finished The Places In Between by Rory Stewart - not really dog related (he adopts a dog who accompanies him) but it is an account of when he walked across Afghanistan - an incredible story so if you fancy something true but less dog related then I'd go for that - it is excellent.

Aww, I was just about to post about Bruce Fogle's Macy books - combine my love of dogs with my love of travel!

How about "One Dog at a Time - Saving the strays of Hellmand", another very moving story of dogs in warfare, by Pen Farthing. Also "No Place Like Home" by the same author.

What a brilliant thread!

I love reading books about dogs, and this thread has given me loads of books to search out and read.

A few books I can suggest are:

One Hundred Ways for a Dog to Train Its Human by Simon Whaley (Amazon)

One Hundred Muddy Paws for Thought also by Simon Whaley (Amazon)

The Bad Dog's Diary: A Year in the Life of Blake: Lover... Fighter... Dog by Martin Howard (Amazon)

Keep them coming. :D

I really didn't enjoy Bruce fogles follow up, ' a dog abroad' tbh, I like the first though :)

In addition to those already mentioned 'merles door' by Ted Kerasote, again not sure it'll be on kindle.

Fiona - Have you read 'in defense of dogs' ? the guardian write up made me add it to my list when it first came out, not bought it yet.

My OH has bought it for me for holiday reading and has been reading it himself with much interest and enjoyment.
I've read a chapter here and there and skimmed other sections but we're not going away till the 20th.
John Bradshaw directs the Anthrozoology Institute at the University of Bristol and has studied dog behaviour for 25 years. As the blurb says the book challenges the caricature of the wolf in a dog suit, ready to dominate its unsuspecting owner. It's a brilliant and very readable book (of the sort that enhances the experience of dog ownership and makes one love them the more for their dogginess rather than for what we project on to them) and I'm sure you would enjoy it.

WoW thank you for all your suggestions, and this also makes a lovely thread to keep updated with good 'dog' books as well I think.

Well I have:

The art of racing in the rain
Lost dogs and lonely hearts
Walking back to happiness
Trust me Im a vet
Finding Harmony

It looks like Ive also got Endal and Hellon4paws coming from Daisyy so I will have a book a day to read at least! Thank you so much Daisyy Ive pm'd you.

Off to go and find a few more for when I get back.

Its also reminded me of some of the books Ive already read, like Walking Ollie and Along Came Dylan which are both good as well. My sons like Michael Morpurgo, so literally the book I read last week was Born to Run although I havent read Shadow.

Ive also found 'Vet on Call' by Marc Abraham which has good reviews as well.

Loads of excellent suggestions made already, I'll suggest a couple of "oldies" which are still brilliant:

Honey and Gemma by Peter Dobson (out of print but available 2nd hand on Amazon)

Any/all of the James Herriot books - if you only want dog stuff there is a James Herriot's Dog Stories compilation.
