Default 1st Walk

10 week update : Chipped jabbed and weighed in at 9.6kg? fit healthy and bounding about.

Monty has now been out for his first walk, jumping and hopping on all fours, very happy puppy. we have not come in to contact with other dogs yet, but has met many people who seem to love him as much as he them.

He does look a bit put out though when not petted by everyone, and he was unimpressed when someone who looked like my wife ignored him!

Let him off the lead in a safe area, teaching him to come back at the moment, all seems to be going well. pictures on their way, will take camera out next walk.

When he got home earlier he slept for about 2 hours, wacked, but has woken recently ready and waiting.

Any advice for meeting other dogs will be appreciated...

Sounds like Monty had a good first walk, keep an eye out in the Get Together and Liaisons section of the forum, hopefully someone will organise a GT in your area, or you could do one yourself.

Obviously Monty won`t be able to go far to begin with but I`m sure you`ll get loads of voulunteers for carrying duties

If you know anyone who has a friendly dog perhaps you could arrange for them to be introduced?

When Barn was a pupster our Vet's ran a Puppy Club which helped them to meet other pups in a safe setting. Maybe you have something similar locally?

hi
glad Monty had a good first walk.
He is going to be a big lad, Buddie weighed 6.5kg at 9 weeks and he seems a bruiser.
Will weigh him next week after last jabs.
Has Monty finished his now?
We have taken Buddie on a path away from dog walking areas and he love hsi walk. Will be glad when we can take him on the fields.
Look forward to photos xx

A few pictures from one of Monty's first walks, 2nd day!
The walk we do is just over a mile, half along a main road on footpaths and on his lead, and the 2 nd half along single farm tracks and an old road now covered with grass off his lead. doesnt leave my side at the moement, so getting him in to it now before he gets too much confidence.

working on come command at the moment, so when we meet others if hes off his lead or heading in to danger got him covered.

Hiya,
I was just looking through this thread and just wanted to remind you of the 5 mins per month walk rule, or opinion anyway. I am no expert at all but it seems most people follow this advice. Especially with our labs and ther joints etc.
As i say i am not preaching but as a new dog owner like yourself i had no idea until i read on here. You may not of realised.
Enjoy your walks xx

Awww lovely boy

I would think 1 mile is too far for a small puppy especially as half is on a hard surface, you should be looking at 10-15 mins at this age.

Thank you for your concern, without it i wouldnt have been highlighted to this. i have just spent the last hour reading all sorts of posts about the 5 minute rule.

The one thing i havent got my head round yet is, my puppies 2/3 months so say ten minutes for now, just. is this ten minutes a day, twice a day? a week?
when i have him off his lead then does this count? as he is in charge of his own destiny? or because i am still walking him and he follows by my feet is he still been walked.

I have read the dangers of wearing out his poor joints and i am horrified. poor little fellow, i will be reigning in his walking distance and time as from this moment, we will nip down the road in the car and then walk through the lanes, rather than walking there.

It's blummin hard to stick to, because you really do get the impression that the little monsters would just go, and go, and go....

I do tend to think that if they'll have problems, then they'll show up eventually regardless of what measures we take.

Blue comes from non-hipscored parents and I spend most of my time worrying that he'll have problems when he's older. But ultimately, what will be will be.

He'll get the best care and treatment should he need it, but at the same time I do not want the additional burden of feeling guilty that somewhere along the line I've contributed to it.

So although it seems so little a time out with them right now, you need to weigh up how guilty you would feel later if there were problems.

Am I getting softer or does he get more gorgeous everytime I come home from work!

I agree totally, the problem is the little man will just keep on going no matter what, which fools me in to this thinking of, hes still not tired am i taking him far enough! when all the time it seems labs are so gladatorial, new word, that he will walk till he sleeps.

off to filey to see the wifes family so will make sure i sick to this, however we are taking him on the beach, now he will be off his lead, does this 15mins of time count? or does the 2 mins from the car on a lead and 3 mins down the beach of his lead to the sea count?

I dont quite understand the rules, and i dont want to harm our newest addition.
