Hi everyone, I collected my 10 week old pup from the breeder on Sunday (29th) and too the vets for a check-up yesterday. I bought the vet's puppy pack which includes a KC vaccination. I asked her if it was necessary and she said that it was only really necessary if he would be going into kennels or mixing with groups of dogs.

What are your thoughts on this, should I or shouldn't I let him have the jab? I don't want him to have too many vaccinations if they are not necessary.

Anna and Wilson.

Kennel Cough is rather like human flu in many respects. There are two totally different infections. Bordetella being the most common, but like Flu is comes in a number of different strains, and again like the flu vaccines, the vaccine manufacturers try to foresee the strain most likely to be around each year and design the latest batch around that strain. But with the way the world has shrunk, with people flying around the world on business and holidays, the manufacturers job has got much harder! It can be the other side of the world today but here tomorrow! (The infection can be brought back on your clothes!)

Again like flu, it can be very serious to both the young and old, who don't have the strength to fight it off. In the case of a healthy adult dog it's annoying, not nice, but rarely a problem. (It is though highly contagious!!)

So, getting back to you, yes, I would have it for your puppy, although I don't normally bother with my adults.

I would definitely have it. My dogs mix with other dogs both at training, shows and kennels. I have oldies too and it’s as important they are protected. It’s one of the vaccinations I actually have for my dogs annually.

If your vet is current with vaccination protocols, they won’t be vaccinating against everything annually anyway so the risks of “over vaccination” should be reduced. Of course, there’s the option of titre testing too.

I'm an awful dog parent and don't bother with the KC vaccination for my adult dogs. I do however give it once to my young pups. I was told it only lasts for 6mths in any case, unless there's a new version out?

I'd definitely recommend getting the kennel cough vaccination. Especially if you're puppy will be socialising with other dogs including out walking, kennels or doggy day care. My poor Belle had kennel cough at only 10 weeks old. It was awful. She had to get antibiotics for it because she was so young so I'd definitely recommend protecting your dog from it. A lot of the kennels and doggy day care facilities / trainers are refusing to take dogs if they haven't received the kennel cough vaccine.
