Default 11month old labrador won't come back.

Hi.

My pup has a really good recall most of the time. And i always remind him and recall every so often each time on a walk even when i don't need to.

Hes been great but the last 3 weeks and it only seems to be in the afternoon when he seems to go hyper, he just won't come back. He runs up and then just stays out of reach and then runs away again. He's done it twice with me now but seems to be more with others in the household.

I'm quite strict with being consistent with him and i always stay calm but today i did get a little annoyed and gave him into trouble when i did get him back on the lead ( i know i shouldn't)

I should also add when i recall i give him a treat and praise everytime. And when i put the lead on him i give him a treat and praise.

Is there any tips or is there anything i'm doing wrong or is this just a puppy phase?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Yes it is a phase, he's in his adolescent period and testing the boundaries. Getting annoyed with him wont help, and in fact is likely to make things worse. Lets face it, would you return if you thought you were going to get a clip round the ear? All dogs go through this stage to a greater or lessor extent and it's all about quietly and calmly working through it.

Try to not ever call your dog unless you are in a position to enforce it. What you don't want is for your dog to learn that he has a choice. Obviously in certain circumstances, where there is danger, you have to call your dog and hope for the best, but in most cases you can choose your moment. There are times, like for example, when your dog has just found an interesting scent, when you know that the scent is more interesting than you, so calling wont work. SO DONT CALL! Bide your time and when he's finished sniffing then you are in with a good chance of success. Look at it like this. Every time you call your dog (Or for that matter, give any command) and your dog ignores it then the command has been devalued. A bolt of lightning did not descend from the sky and smite him, so maybe it's OK to ignore commands?? If your dog ignoring you and is going away from you then it's OK to sound cross. But the instant he stops then lighten up and use a happy voice. A little bit of the Jekyll and Hyde. But it's so important that coming towards you is a happy occasion.
