Default Skin Chaffing

Hi, my 3 year old lab retriever suddenly develop chaffing due to his harness today. He was perfectly fine (went hiking for 9 miles) rested (without the harness I checked there was nothing on his front arms). It was towards the evening (I went to buy some stuff while hubby spent time with him near the river) and I noticed his front arms were red. After cleaning and drying it (the left arm was chaf worst then the other..could see his skin alittle). I applied coconut oil to soothe but am wondering is there anything else that I can do to ease it? He keeps licking it so I've put an ecollar when he's awake?

Also we are currently on a hiking trip, am alittle hesitant if I should let the raw skin get irritated with the different elements as well as the hot weather. I know he will not be bothered by ot if he's exploring new places but just concern if it would slow down the healing process

Many thanks in advance. Much appreciated
