Default Help! New to this!!

We have a gorgeous chocolate Labrador who will be 3 in October. We are wondering about him being a stud dog although we have no pedigree for him. I have spoken to the vet and she advised to have his hip score done but just wondered how we would go about finding a butch for him etc. Thank you

Sorry but my answer is, if he's not registered with the kennel club, forget it. No responsible breeder would use him, and I'm sure you would not want an irresponsible breeder using him. Add to that, once he gets a taste for it you could well have problems with his straying looking for bitches. Enjoy him as a pet and forget about this stud business, you would certainly not show a profit. Hip and elbow scoring, around 400 to 500, DNA tests for PRA, EIC, CNM, SD2 and HNPK, around 50 each so you are looking at 750 for health tests. Then as an unregistered dog it's doubtful that anyone would pay more than 50 for his services, that's if you found anyone at all. Stud dogs do not pick bitches. The bitch owner picks a dog so even with a registered dog to be in demand he would need to have done something such as win in the show ring or be a good working dog. The bitch owner has the choice of a thousand dogs so without something to get him noticed it's a non starter. Sorry to be blunt, but that's the way it is.

Just to back John up, as a bitch owner, I would want KC registration, proven pedigree, proven dog (working or show), help from stud dog owner (OK, we all start somewhere but you need to learn pedigrees and health tests etc very quickly), and, a good stud dog handler will know, after learning, when a bitch is receptive, and help achieve a good mating and tie. So really, it's a no from 'me', and I'd say your vet is being extremely optimistic, as John said, it's hips, elbows, BVA eye cert and then all the genetic tests, so a lot of money, and possibly no interest in your boy.

Thank you both for your honesty. He is adorable and I will leave him as he is - the most wonderful boy in the world
