Default Oh wow!

Just when I was thinking I might concentrate on Pops, Freddie only goes and wins the Reserve CACS, the French ťquivalent of reserve challenge certificate. Strong competition for the CACS too.

Iím thrilled to bits. He loves showing and several judges have said heíd be a late developer, maybe itís happening. I should have more faith in him.

He won a massive trophy too!

Well done!

Branta has the legs of a super model at the minute, I don't hold out much hope for a showing career

She will change, a lot, I’ve no doubt.

Pops is really bummy uppy but at the moment her legs aren’t long enough for her body. There’s still plenty of growth in her legs, judging by the size of her knuckles, so I’m hoping that will improve. Also unless I can pull her forward and stretch her hind legs further back her topline dips at the moment. Fortunately I’ve an excellent ringcraft mentor, a judge and breeder (she’s judging at Crufts in 2023 but judges all over Europe), who give terrific tips in handling. I’m sure it’s handling skills that can make a massive difference to how the dogs are presented. Freddie was mega hard work but now I’ve managed to learn handle him so the judge can examine all his teeth and go over him without too much fuss. He is a natural when it comes to standing and moves beautifully.

It’s amazing when you hear what’s required from a judges perspective; the different paces for example when going out and back compared to running in a circle, or the different movement they want to see on the different sides of a triangle. Making sure you’re never between the judge and the dog, watching for those pesky judges who change positions of move your dogs feet or legs when they’re going over them. I’ve learnt this really handy move to use at the end of the out and back so that you walk your dog into the final present. The dog walks into a near perfect stand every time. Very handy with a freestanding breed. I’ve only ever seen one other lab handler do it in France...and I know he’s a judge in training.

Oh, and the show rings that are on a slope or have dips.

We'll probably have a dabble at it, I need to look where there are ring craft classes nearby and get to one or two of those.

Oh, you should try it though I’ve heard they can be variable in thea UK. Don’t be put off though.

I love our ringcraft classes, we learn so much about all sorts of other things too. We also take turns in being the judge, getting a chance to go over different dogs and breeds and giving dogs a chance to be examined by different people. We also swap dogs so we get to handle and learn about other breeds.

Our little ringcraft group often go to shows together, help each other out with spare hands for handling dogs and lugging stuff. I’ve handled Dallies for my friend.

We had lovely success this weekend, a RCACS for Freddie, best minor puppy for Aranka, a CCR...she got 3rd place best minor puppy in show, Oula, a Dallie got best junior in breed and Gp 3 in junior, Rosie, another Dallie got a CACS, Merlot, a Sussex Spaniel got a CACS and best of breed, Poppy, my girl, got 2nd place and very promising in the female puppy class.

Who’d have thought it? Ringcraft classes don’t exist in France yet I’ve stumbled across one run by someone who live 10 minutes up the road! Best €10 a week I’ve ever invested.

I went to ringcraft with Zasa, and, although she loved the classes, I think I bored her rotten as I was showing her and Rhuna, and she was the one who got put in the crate between classes. She soon learned that playing up in the ring gets her out of showing, which she did, and obviously as it was successful, she won, and I stopped taking her.

I've downloaded a pdf off the KC website and will get Branta along to some classes. I'll only be showing her now, so hopefully, we won't have the same problem as I had with her mum.
