My Poppy has always had a problem with loud bangs and even motorbikes can freak her out. Firework season is a particular problem for her. My vet's recently recommended a natural plant extract (It's made by Canibio but I got it from www.chemeyes.co.uk, I expect it's available on Amazon etc but I haven't looked). I've been using it for just over a week and already there's a noticeable difference, instead of jumping on the sofa in a panic when she hears something she just looks at the window which is really great progress for her. I'm hoping firework night will be stress-free this year but I'll update again and let you know if was effective for repetitive bangs! If you have a nervous dog I can definitely recommend it.

None of mine are worried about noise; thunder, gunshot, very very low flying aircraft (Airbus test flights and Mirage jets doing low level training). The pups as yet don’t associate gunshot with hunting but they will. We always have gunshots around us but they’re hunting wild boar and deer not game birds.

America does not have the same history as here in the UK. We have a firework night, November the 5th, the day in 1605 when Robert Catesby, Guy Fawkes and company tried unsuccessfully to blow up parliament. This has been celebrated with fireworks ever since. In the days of my youth fireworks went on sale around 2 weeks before, and disappeared on November the 6th. Keeping dogs in for just one evening was not really a problem. Trouble is, times change. Now it's possibly to buy fireworks for 12 months of the year. People have fireworks at weddings, birthdays, in fact just about any time, and that's when the problems arise. Add to that it has got commercialised to the extent that displays are organised with tickets sold. And of course, all organisers want the maximum attendance so displays are organised over several consecutive days, meaning that Guy Fawkes night starts a week to 10 days before, continuing for as long after.

I am totally against banning firework night, as a child I loved it. Bonfire and fireworks in the garden, with jacket potatoes cooking in the embers. What I would like to ban is the commercialisation of firework night, a limit on the power of fireworks, and a limit on days when they can be let off. getting back to the old "Firework Night"
