Default Bad turn for Kaiser

I havenít been on the forum for a while due to being generally busy with one thing and another. Things have been going really well with Kaiser and Inca however last night Kaiser took a sudden turn for the worse.

Iíd been out for a couple of hours and came back at 10:30pm to find Kaiser had brought a bit of phlegm up on the living room floor. I didnít think too much of it as he has done it occasionally in the past if heís had something irritating his throat. After cleaning up though he kept doing soft coughs and wretching to bring more phlegm up. I thought he might be starting with a touch of kennel cough. He carried on through the night on and off but seemed ok within himself.

This morning he seemed a little lethargic with it so I took him in to work to get checked. His heart seemed ok so his heart condition didnít seem to be causing the issue so he had bloods and an ultrasound to check his prostate etc after his bout of prostatitis last year. The bloods showed the white blood cells were a little low and the ultrasound showed some material in his bladder which the vet said could be anything from blood cells, blood clots or something more sinister. She said she could either do xrays and take a urine sample which would mean waiting for results or given the fact he was acting basically the same when he had the prostatitis and rapidly went into V-Tach, we could refer him straight away to Leahurst in Liverpool that treated him for the prostatitis so that they would have a cardiologist on hand. So I opted to refer him.

Leahurst were unable to see him until tomorrow so I chose to refer him to vets now in Manchester. They gave me the choice of either stabilising him overnight so I could transfer him to Leahurst tomorrow or allow them to take over his full care. I asked for them to take over his full care as I didnít want him going further downhill and I also didnít want to be transporting him round when heís unwell.

I dropped him off at Manchester earlier this afternoon and they said they are going to focus on his heart first and do an Echo as heís having rapid breathing to check his heart and rule it out as the cause. They said theyíre not ruling out his issue last year with Prostatitis and will do an ultrasound and will also be doing xrays as they can hear some noise on his lungs as well as other tests. They said if they get some results this evening then they will call me with them but if not I will get an update tomorrow.

Iím just praying that whatever the cause itís treatable and he pulls through. It feels so wrong to be sitting here and only have Inca sitting next to me, even though Kaisers laid back and easy going the house seems so much quieter without him.
Iíve already cried over everything and tonight Iíll no doubt just spend the whole night worrying until I get some news. Iím just praying itís good news.

I had a call last night from the vet to give me an update. She said they had given Kaiser pain relief and he was doing well and seemed comfortable. They had checked his heart and it was in sinus rhythm and a heart scan showed he wasn’t in heart failure. They’ve also done an ultrasound to check the prostate and they are happy that the changes to his prostate occurred when he had the prostatitis and not recently as they match the results of his last ultrasound. He’s also showing no pain when they examine his prostate.

They have done xrays which have shown changes to his lungs so they are going to send the images to another specialist and see what he comes up with to explain the changes. He did have discharge from his nose a couple of weeks ago that he had antibiotics for so they’ve said one possibility is pneumonia. If it turns out to be the cause they will have to put dye into his lungs to determine the right treatment course for him but at the minute he shows no signs of fever etc.

They’ve done some blood tests and they’ve tested for lungworm which has come back clear. They said he has a bit of an increased respiratory rate but with no increased effort. They’ve said that if he continues to do well and shows no sign of going downhill then he may be able to come home today for the weekend. If they’re not happy with how he is then he’ll have to stay over the weekend.

They’re going to give me another call this morning to let me know how he’s been through the night. I just want my boy home now it’s not the same without him here

Had a call this morning to say he’s been diagnosed with pneumonia but that they have also seen a possible foreign body in his lung. They’ve started him on antibiotics and his respiratory rate has improved. They’re happy to send him home today but he has to go back at 8am on Monday for a scope on his lungs to check the suspected foreign body and remove it or if it’s not s foreign body they will biopsy it.
So I’m collecting him after work and we’re going to have a chilled night
