Default Freddie

Hes now nearly 8 months old, at last weigh in a month ago hit the scales at 35k.

Weve been to three international shows (equivalent if a champ show) and he was awarded very promising by three different judges, one French, one Swiss and one Slovenian. Very promising is the highest rating for a puppy in France so Im chuffed. They dont place in baby and puppy classes. Hes had some very nice critiques too. The consensus is hes well proportioned for a dog of his age and will improve as he matures. Hes big but still very much a puppy. The great thing is he enjoys the shows and is always madly wagging his tail. Since Ive been to ringcraft I feel way more confident too.

We have now worked our way at our dog club up through puppy and basic obedience and now are in intermediate. There are several gundog breeds so our trainer (who is also an international judge) is going to start gundog classes. Apparently Freddie will need to pass some sort of test if hes to become a champion (in my dreams).

Our dog club also does ringcraft, flyball and trieball. To my amazement Freddie excels in Flyball too. Obviously its nothing like the flyball you see at Crufts but in week 2 he did a perfect out run, picked up a ball and an in run straight back to me. I nearly fainted with shock! He was the fastest too at 5,7 seconds.

Trieball is harder work but helps with directional commands and control.

My life is transformed since he came along. The girls lives have been stirred up too and even the oldies have a new lease of life.

I’ve spent a few years in a dark place. I made the decision to get him, “out of the blue”, hence his kennel name “out of the Blue of tintagel winds” I don’t regret it for one minute despite the fact he’s very hard work compared to my girls.

I don’t think he’ll ever be a champion, my ringcraft classes cover conformation and structure in detail (because we have several trainee judges in our class). He has good conformation, could be better around his front angulation, but I don’t think he’ll be headturningly exceptional. His coat is currently questionable too...he could be a curly coat! He is a keen, natural retriever so, you never know, that might be the way to go. He’s smart, sometimes I think he’s way too smart for me.

Regardless, I’ve done so much, made loads of new friends, learnt new skills. It’s been great. I can thoroughly recommend a Labrador instead of therapy.

As I guess you know, Kiera works her dogs as well as show, and regularly handles them in the Gamekeepers Ring at Crufts. So the line should work nicely. I met Felicity at Crufts one year, Kiera introduced us. We had a nice chat.

Yes, Kira won her class at Crufts again this year. Felicity took one of her young bitches, O.P.I., who is a daughter of Carromers Charlie Chalk by AI.
