I have never frozen fruit but do freeze carrots - I understand if carrots are frozen then the consumption of pulp enables the vitamins to be absorbed rather than just the fibre if given raw. Not sure if the same applies to fruit - I just thought the freezing was to make it last longer and assist with teething in pups????

I've always frozen it to make it last longer and give them something to chew on - also nice for them if its a warm day Laughing

I mash up and freeze fruit / veg / left overs etc in ice cube trays and freeze them then put them into freezer bags .

I use them to fill abbeys kong or just to eat as a snack. Its a quick easy stand by if you havent got anything for her kong ! I find she has more variety this way as we have half a freezer shelf with just Abbeys food in !

Its also nice for them to have something cold in the summer to eat. Abbeys also loves just plain ice cubes too !

Nearly right Vicky Smile

Freezing and/or crushing in a juicer/blender breaks down the cellular walls and makes the macro nutrients available to the dog's body..... Cellulose itself in the form of sugar beet pulp etc etc is used in dogs food NOT as a nutrient but as a stool bulker and therefore has no nutritional benefit to the dog.

Whether frozen or fresh, any vegetable need to be completely pulped for a dog to get any nutrients from it.... otherwise it is simply discarded the same way it went in Very Happy

So Kay am i doing right by mashing and freezing fruit etc or should i be blending it smooth, i just thought abbey might like a bit of texture to it .

In this case if i give abbey a raw carrot it should be frozen first so she benefits from the nutrients, is that right !

Sorry im getting confused ! Confused

Hi Lorri, you dont need to freeze the vegetables or fruit, just put through a blender...But it must be completely pulped for a dog to get any of the nutrients from it.... unlike us humans Smile dogs have no concept of texture....

ie: crunchy oooh my favourite
sloppy ooooh my favourite
rotten carcass ooooh my favourite

Very Happy Very Happy

whole carrots as fine a recreational toy/chew but dont overdo them... they are full of sugar, one a day is enough

Bananas are readily absorbed, simply peel and feed

Thanks Kay

Abbey loves banana and most fruit , we gave her an orange today but she just kept playing with it , hubbie said she wants it peeling so he peeled it for her and she still wouldnt eat it until he broke it all into segments for her !!! then she soon polished it off ! Very Happy
