I have 2 X 18 month olds (brother & sister) Could someone give me some advice about my little girl please. She seems to have excess skin, almost as if she hasn't grown into it properly. All over, she seems to be baggy, but the worst area is on her abdomen, where she looks like she's had a recent pregnancy (she hasn't) She had her 1st season 3 months ago and is due to be spayed next week. I'm worried about the incision, because between her folds, she is a little sore from the rubbing. She is well, active and the correct weight. All it is is really baggy skin. Can anyone help? Confused

Gill

It could very well be that it may have stretched during a growth spurt. She may still have a little more filling out too. I don't think it is anything to worry about but you should mention this to your vet when she goes in for spaying. They will advise you fully; it is difficult when we cannot see her. Regarding the rubbing and I expect soreness, you must mention this to your vet, she could have an eczema or other skin allergy which can be treated. The scar from her spay will run down the middle of her abdomen and should not be affected. Many dogs who have had litters and got looser tummies go through a spay with no specific problems with their stretched skin.
Sending some healing vibes for her spay day

Some types of Lab do seem to have an excess of skin. It's almost as if their skin was made for a much larger dog.

I know a choccie girl who has so much spare skin, I'm sure you could fit a second Labrador inside it and when she runs, it flaps up and down around her face like the dog out of Turner and Hooch. Laughing

Just make sure any folds and creases are kept clean and dry, as any dirt or dampness trapped in there could cause skin infections.

That pretty much describes Rufus. From a puppy we've always said he'll grow into his skin one day but he'll be two in march and I'm not sure he will Wink It's not pinch an inch it's pinch 6! He's a boy and he's undercarriage is ok but as he runs he looks like his skin ripples, not the best photo but kinda shows what I mean

If you're worried I would talk to your vet before the spay as I'm sure they could give you some advise or reassurance.

Hope everything goes well with her spay.

xx

Yep this girl is the same....All saggy and baggy underneath, as if she has had loads of litters, when she hasn't even had one.

I don't think there is much you can do about it, as it's just the way they are. One good thing though, unlike us women, she won't be looking in the mirror and thinking she needs a tummy tuck. Wink

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I feel reassured now. I laughed out loud at the comment about the tummy tuck - that's what she looks like she needs bless her heart.

She also went saggy after her season. I sort of wish now that she had been spayed earlier before she had her season, but it seems that's not done anymore according to my vet.

We can look in the mirror together and compare sags and bags

Don't punish yourself about the spay. My vet would be mortified if any of mine had been spayed before their first season.
There's nothing wrong with a few female curves Wink
