Ok confession time - we bought a small bag of Autarky to see what its like, as I've heard good things about it on here (and it's £10 cheaper a bag than lab life!) Left it for a couple of weeks while we got spaying out the way, waited another couple of days for Rosie's runs to go (she stayed the night with her grandogs, who not only gave her pretty much the whole tin of DOG biscuits we left with them for treating, but also fed her half a packet of cheesy crackers which didn't agree with her too well)

Finally opened the packet and I have to confess it just doesn't look as nice as her current food. The kibble is smaller, doesn't smell or taste as nice (yes I have tried it, Alphaboy thinks I'm nuts but...) it's quite veggy tasting whereas Lab Life which is salmon based has quite a good flavour and is a nice shape - ok I am starting to sound a bit nuts now. Obviously we will see how Rosie likes it and how it likes her, but I just wondered if anyone else's choice of dog food was influenced by how appealing it is to you?

Please don't send the men in white coats (or Gillian McKeith) round!

I did taste recently, had a very small nibble, to see if I could tell why Corbie wouldn't eat it (see mouldy autarky thread for more details, it was a faulty batch!), but just thought I don't even know what it tastes like normally so I wouldn't have known there was anything wrong with it Laughing

I have found with other treats that fish ones do tend to have a stronger smell that others, maybe its the same for taste?

hiya..lol.. i have tried my dogs food Embarassed Embarassed not recently may i add though!..lmao..

i feed my with lartons own working dog breeders pack 15kg the smell is nice n strong sort of meaty smell the chunks are of various sizes with meat cubes vegatables and such i sometimes alternate there dry food food ie: 1 month they will have chicken n rice next month another flavour i dont want them to feel bored of there feed..lol.. but they have been eating this one for 4-5 months now and so far they havent put there nose up or got bored with it..lol.

there choice of food is down to them really they tell me when they have had enough of it (or is that because mine are pampered a wee bit to much..lmao) if they dont finish there food for say 3 days on the run then i will change the flavour for them..lol..

ROFLMAO @ Mary - Superb Laughing Laughing Wink

I can't ever confess to trying the dogs food, although certain variations of the ND actually do smell very nice - and we had an interesting conversation about the fact that it is apparently proven that many of the 'wet' dog foods are healthier than many of the things us humans eat Shocked

Can't say I would be even remotely tempted to try the tripe / beef & tripe and other assorted meats we feed Clover though Shocked Eurghh - the smell is bad enough Sad

I would rather not try my dogs dinner- it probablytastes as bad as it smells- though nature diet does 'look' good enough to eat. I always used Chappie for Jet for years until he went off it that was rank too. With jet being so fussy of late i wonder if the smell has anything to dop with it!

Very Happy I eat my dogs food quite often .... when there is nothing of my food in the fridge or freezer that I fancy at any given time...I have a plateful of dog food..... OK, my lot are fed raw, so, I just pinch a chicken, rabbit or pheaseant etc and cook it for myself.... Embarassed Very Happy

Alphagirl, one of the reasons the Autarky does not look as appetising as other foods, it that it is a plain brown kibble....no uneccessary additives or colourings....it may look unappertising to us but dogs could not care less what colour the food is Very Happy A food that is highly coloured has nothing to do with nutrition, it may look good to us, but could be more detrimental to the dogs welfare on the whole....additives can cause hyperactivity, skin problems and other uneccessary problems....

I fed Autarky to my lot before I changed completely to raw, and they did very well on it.

Yup, i was going to say the same thing as above.
It looks plain because it has no additives etc in it.
My dog absolutely thrives on Autarkys.
Dogs have a completely different taste to ours. Lets face it dogs like to eat sh*t... we don't.... different tastes completely.
I don't want to try my dogs food, and i never will. My dog is very happy on it and enjoys it, thats enough for me.
