Ok, I knew as soon as i posted something about how wonderfully behaved Poppy was it would turn round and bite me on the bum!

Lead walking - now she hasn't been the best at this over recent times but its something we work on every day and slowly but surely we are making progress on the pulling. I do the stop/start with her but have also found that if I distract her from the go with a treat and then keep telling her what a good heel she is doing and reward the good walking we get much further. I suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis and the pulling is something we need to nail as some days are worse then others for me and I can struggle a bit on the walk. Anyway, we tried a halti - took a while of playing with it and treat 'bribery' for her to wear it and come out on the walk and after a couple of walks things were much better - that is until I was messing on picking up her poop and felt the lead go slack and realised she had eaten through the damn thing! Don't ask me me how so managed to chew it (and it was fitted properly) let alone chew right through it but she did so I have been reluctant to get another one...

At the moment I use a normal Red Dingo collar and fabric lead for her.

Ok so onto the new trick. We start our walk and she 8/10 walks lovely to heel and doesn't pull which is fantastic however on the return journey she grabs the lead in her mouth and starts pulling backwards and throwing herself backwards whilst growling at me. This has only just started happening in the last few days. She is bloody strong and if I don't get this sorted she will have me over. I always have treats with me for heel walking so yesterday I was hanging on to the lead with one hand for dear life whilst trying to hold a treat out with the other. She was not interested one little bit, she wouldn't drop the lead she was intent on pulling it off me and taking me with it!

I managed to pull her in close and prise the lead out of her mouth and wrapped it round my hand so the lead was very short and held it straight up so she couldn't reach round to bite it again and got her home quick smart. This morning the same thing happened but I was a bit quicker and got the lead shortened and got her home.

I presume its because she doesn't want to come home - she wants to stay out on the walk but what on earth am I to do when even food hasn't worked? I had thought of taking her cuddly toy out with me on the next walk and see if I can distract her with that.

She has practically bitten through her lead now so I am going to have to get a new one later today - should I get a chain lead?

Any suggestions will be greatly received

Thanks

Joanne

Ollie used to bite the lead. I think when he gets over excited he likes to have something in his mouth.
We have had terrible trouble with pulling. We tried a haliti and that didn't work as he just put it in his mouth. On recomendation from someone else on here we have now tried a gencon- this is like a halti but the lead hangs to the side/back of the head. We got an all in one with a clip to attach to his actual collar which was very useful.
If you didn't want to get another lead we found telling him to sit and calm him down worked better to stop him trying to play with the lead in his mouth.
I expect it is just a phase that needs to be discouraged.

For the sake of safety, I'd get her a chain lead for now.

Many dogs like to mouth something if they are excited or anxious, some will grab at hands, clothes, etc, other's their lead. The trouble is they will then often make a game out of it, which it sounds like she's doing now.

I think the idea of taking along a toy for her to hold is a good one, as at least then you can encourage her to hold the right thing and praise her for doing so, rather than her grabbing something she shouldn't have and you having a battle over it.

Sam would refuse to move in any headcollar even if you bribe him I did try that once!

Have you considered a harness, she'd find it far harder to swizzle round and pull the lead from you if you have a harness with a double ended lead and you hold it like reins. The fleecy double ended leads they sell at xtradog and dog-games are harder to chew through but soft on your hands and I personally like the ezy dog vario 6 lead which is really thick eating through that would take a long time and again it has two clips so you can clip two to her collar or harness or put it round your waist, clip it to make the lead long or short and so on.

I think the toy idea is good too, a trainer we saw suggested that for when Sam is frightened of nasty scary cylists (goodness only knows why!) so he has his 'squirrel ball' which is one of these tailspinners ones http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=183&pf_id=6639 it's easy to put in your pocket and Sam loves his, it only comes out on walks as a distraction to keep it interesting.
