I had an interesting morning with Mojo today. Sunday mornings is Rugby morning in our household which involves all of us bundling into the car and my elder son playing Rugby, my husband occasionally coaching, and me sitting around with my daughter, baby son and Mojo chatting with other Rugby mums.
Today was particularly "interesting" due to me sitting with another couple of mums who had their dogs with them two. Between us we had 3 intact males and one intact bitch. The other males are housemates and get on absolutely fine. Mojo, in his usual fashion, was very happy to interact with Megan the bitch, but there was a lot of snarling, lunging and aggressive behaviour towards the other males who responded in kind and we had to keep them on their leads and well apart.
I took Mojo for a wonder around the Rugby grounds and stopped to chat to another friend. Whilst we were chatting, Mojo spotted another dog, and before I knew it, he'd cocked his leg and peed all down me. I was absolutely fuming. Part of me can see the funny side too, but it's utterly gross and it's not the first time he's done it. Both times it's happened it's been when I've been talking to people and it's almost like he's been saying "bored now - move on woman".
I guess my question is - why has he done it? Is he marking me as his "territory/bitch"? I'm fed up of being constantly hauled around for him to mark and I spend a lot of time correcting him but it doesn't seem to make the slightest bit of difference. I've considered castrating him before but because I've felt that a lot of his iffy behaviour with other dogs has been fear-based growlyness and have been told it could make it worse, I've held off. But he's fine with bitches... I don't think he's EVER growled or got grumpy with a bitch. It's always males. If they're intact he's pretty much guaranteed to want to fight. If they're castrated, he'll generally leave well alone and avoid them unless they're up for a play or he feels threatened (when he'll growl but he'll also make sure I'm between the other dog and him - big chicken).
My intact male used to be growled and snarled at by other intact males who I am told saw him as a threat, since he was been "done" at 14months this has all disappeared, but I must admit I have never been Peed on!! it s funny as long as its not happening to you.
Tell you what Christine - it's particularly disgusting if you're wearing Crocs which is what I happened to be wearing the first time he did it to me.
He tried doing it to other people when we went on the lab meet at Whiteway last weekend, and he cocked his leg on the buggy when I got him out of the car today. It's really becoming a problem and I'm not entirely sure what I can do. I know that castrating mightn't help much but not sure what else to try.
Not sure what you have tried, but when Bruno came to us in April he was 6 years old, and his limited history of behaviour warned us that he marked everyting including his food bowl , the first thing he did when shown round indoors was to go to bowl on the floor and **** his leg, I was a bit to slow at the moment it happened to do anything, however I watched him closely for a few minutes and when he started to try it again on chair leg a quick AH AH stopped him in his tracks, I then had to do it once more when leg went up on garden chair and from that day we have not had the problem since, except once when he tried to pee on Mischa when she was having a poo in the garden and the AH AH worked and stopped him, timing is the key, and I did'nt tell him off, just a bit of a growl and carried on as if it was not a big thing.
I hope you can stop him as I agree it is a unsavoury habit, and rather awkward to smile when standing in wet Crocs .
Yuk, poor you! I don't have any advice on the marking but wanted to reassure you that you are not alone with being peed on. Harry once did an excited wee on my head while I was laying in bed, and he also cocked his leg on my neighbour once while they were kindly walking him when we were out for the day
Well, I disagree. I think castration will stop it.
Every uncastrated male foster dog I've had here has marked in my house, none of them have ever gone as far as peeing on me or my husband, although poor Frank seems to be the target for that and he's been peed on a fair few times! However, the marking behaviour has stopped within a few days of them being castrated.
I don't think there's enough basis to assume any issue he has with other male dogs would be made worse if he's castrated; in fact, I'd be more inclined to say that it might help. Whilst he's uncastrated he's more likely to cause you a problem by being territorlal, marking etc, and if he encounters an inseason bitch (believe me, some silly people dont take precautions when it comes to walking their in-season girls ) For pet owners that are not intending to stud their dog, I honestly can't see the benefit in leaving him uncastrated. Particularly given the difficulties in rehoming the 7 or 8 puppies he could sire should he meet a bitch in season.
For example; I'd say if he's marking you when you stand still because there's another male around, if you bring another male into your house or you visit friends with a male, he'll mark. This might not be an issue for you, but worth a mention.
Also worth a mention is the reaction of other dog owners should your dog pee on them. I know someone who has 2 little uncastrated dogs and they have this terrible habit of peeing up peoples legs when walkings - and believe me, it made for some awkward moments and difficult conversations on occasion until she had them both castrated.

I've got to agree with Jane that castration will stop it, and have not heard anyone say it causes issues with intact dogs other than they may try to hump him if he is done, but the ones I've seen doing the humping are probably serial humpers , and may need castration to sort them out also. [ I know that is not your question]
Have you has a chat with the vet to get some informed advise.
If he's already got a big problem with male dogs, then how much worse can it get? He'd have only peed up me the once and then his plums would have been no more.
I guess my concern is that the problem escalates from just male dogs to all dogs. I do think enough is enough though. I put the first peeing on me down to youthful stupidity. He's nearly 2 years old now. I think it's probably territorial and macho posturing now.
read ing the posts reminded me Arley does not mark since he has been castrated he never did in the house but couldn t walk because he had to pee on everything he does two or three when off lead but that is all and his humping of other dogs has stopped also. Off with his plums I say!!!!
