Hiya my dog is approx 10 kgs over weight and i was wondering what is the best food for him to lose weight also what vegtables can be fed and what can i give as treats thanks
Has your vet told you your dog is overweight? I ask this because most vets will recommend a diet food and exercise plan for a dog that has quite a bit to lose. Our dog loves vegetables, carrot, broccoli, swede, peppers and cauliflower. I put them in the food processor and keep them in the fridge so I always have a supply. She also has fruit, mostly apples and pears. We only give treats when we recall or are reinforcing good manners.
Yes my vet said he was over weight and said to put him on a light food and cut back on it feed only what it says for 32kg not 42kg but she also said he is a big lad this is because he was 1 of only 2 in the litter.
Also do you cook all vegtables first and should i mix half and half with his food to make up weight for example if it was 300g should i feed 150g of veg and 150g of food thanks
No I don't cook the vegetables, she eats them raw, but they need to be cut really small as they are not easily absorbed. They are used more as a filler so the dog feels fuller but has very few calories. If the dog food says 300g for a 32kg dog, I would feed 250g and a couple of handfuls of mixed veg. I give Molly raw whole carrots to chomp on. We are very strict with her, but it is really worth it.
Good luck. I suggest you do it slowly as otherwise he may become a scavenger. It will take time, but if you gradually increase his exercise as well it will greatly help.
I agree about not buying specialist foods, just feed less. Cut out the treats, they don't need them. I normally add the vegetable peelings to my boys dinners.
My boys all got up to well over 40k each, they now range from 33k -35k.
It takes a while but once they get there they reap the benefits.
Good luck and don't cave in, coz it's you that will give in to the puppy dog eyes and ruin his diet.
