Does anyone think that giving dogs sunflower oil in the diet would benefit them.

Personally I would look at my oils and ask myself why am I feeding them and what do I want the dog to get out of it. In general oils are fed to ensure adequate intake of Omega 3s; most diets, commercial or fresh are heavily Omega 6 weighted because commercial foods are grain based and meat is grain fed. Therefore you want to be looking at Fish Body Oils rather than sunflower, olive, or rapeseed oils. Alternatively some people feed flaxseed oil (linseed) however this can have itch problems in some dogs. If you feed FBO (1000mg/day) then you would probably look at giving Vit E (200 - 400 iu/day) as well as this has a synergistic effect. Smile

As Kay says, look at the diet as a whole. A little Olive oil added to the food is often recomended but be careful. If you are giving oil in one place then you dont want to be giving it somewhere else or you could be unbalancing the diet.

As a general rule, I am not happy with supplementing food for the reasons above. A balanced food is only balanced if it is fed straight. Saying that, I do give Pilchards in Tomato Sauce every Sunday lunch time. Apart from that, the food I give already contains Linseed oil so I figure nothing else is needed.

If I pour any more oil into my dogs I will be in danger of giving them more oil than my Landrover and that would never do! One oil drinker in the family is quite enough! Wink

Regards, John
