We've decided to feed our little Wendy Burns Mini and was wondering when will be a good time to change it over?
The breeder currently has her on Purina ProPlan Puppy Large Breed. Can I start mixing small amounts of Burns into her food immediately?Do I have to keep her on Purina for another week before mixing? I want her to start getting the better food asap!
hi - we too changed Ruby to Burns as the breeders food didnt suit us. We left it 2 weeks on her old food - this was after advice on here. Its the most stressfull time in a little pups life when you bring them home so its best to keep as much the same as possible.
Once she had been with us for 2 weeks we changed her over gradually. HTH
If I was you I would keep little Wendy on the current food, just for a bit longer (a week as you say ) Just so she settles into her new home. She will adjusting so its nice you wont have to worry about changing the food.
Then when she's settled you can change bit by bit. Maybe a quarter of Burns for a few days, then half, then three quarters. Im sure she'll be fine
I prefer what I read about the ingredients put into Burns' food, e.g. no maize, no battery chicken etc.
I received wonderful customer service from them and know they will be there to guide me (other than everyone here, of course ).
And Purina is owned by Nestle, which I believe, animal tests. Even if they didn't, I'm not a huge Nestle fan to begin with regarding other fair trade issues. I'm definitely no fanatic but do my bit when I can, sort of If I can improve my lil puppy's food while doing it, even better!

Absolutely. Experiment. But you may find in the long run that ProPlan works for her best.
My dogs thrive on ProPlan and did terrible on Burns so it all boils down to the individual.
If you go ahead with the switch, leave it for a few weeks. Despite what you feel, follow the breeders guidelines. For a pup a sudden change in diet can cause an upset stomach. After a few weeks mix in the her old food with the new over the course of 2 weeks until a total transition has been made. This is much less of an issue for adult dogs but should be done for a pup.
We changed our pup from what the breeder was feeding (Arden Grange) to Burns soon after we had her (AG seemed too high in protein), mixing a bit of one with the other for a few days until all the free bag that came with her was finished (waste not, want not!). Didn't notice any problems
