Hi everyone,
Whilst reading through some of the previous posts, we became a bit concerned about the whole Hip Displasia/Elbow Displasia thing. Our Brucey is only 13 months and prevention is always better than cure!Anyway, digressing, I may sound like a complete idiot but whilst visiting Holland and Barrett we thought we could get some Cod Liver Oil capsules for our boy as now and again he gets a limp on either his left or right paw when he gets a bit physical on his trips to the meadows, swimming, running, socialising etc... We took him to the vets on two occasions and she could not find anything wrong and prescribed him rimadril. Anyway, these codliver oil caps are 1000mg of cod liver oil as well as 800ug of vitamin A and 5ug of vitamin D. Are these safe, we have not give him any yet and would appreciate any feedback/advice

i dont give my dogs any supplements unless you call 2 tins of pilchards a week a supplement ...
i would ask your vet before you start adding vitamins to food..
i give cod liver oil capsules to my black lab only because she has arthirits and even then thats not every day its more like every other day ..

Hiya... i personally wouldnl't give cod liver oil to a dog, because of the vitamin A and D - which they get from their food, and too much can be toxic That said, I know some people do and their dogs are fine, but I wouldn't risk it because i'm a complete worrier!!! you could always try fish BODY oil, sold as omega 3 fish oil or EPA fish oil - 1000mg per day is about right for a lab, and it doesn't work out much dearer than the cod liver oil. Just to add though, if you're giving any kind of fish oil, it's advisable to give it with natural vit E (400iu per day) to get the full benefits

I'm not a lover of Cod Liver Oil, possibly because I come from the era where we had to take our Cod Liver oil capsuls every day!
Actually, in those days it was thought to be "Safe" but we now know that not only are they toxic to dogs but they are also toxic to humans! (My mum was obviously trying to get the insurance on me!)
Used in moderation they are ok, but in excess can cause big problems.
Regards, John
