Maple has always been a chewer, shes chewed toys, Ushers zippy bed (through the bars of her crate no less) she destroys black kongs, she makes holes in fleece blankets and also turns vet bed over and makes that about as much uses as a tea strainer. She isnt in pain, she isnt teething, shes not on any meds nor stressed nor underexercised, she just loves nibbling holes in things and Im now at a loss as to what to put in her crate that she wont eat. Plus Im seriously worried about an impaction or blockage.

I have kept her in the crate overnight since she arrived because living in a rented house I was worried about her chewing the kitchen overnight, and she is now 10 months old. However after going through sooo many fleece blankets, a cottony sofa throw that I folded up and put in her crate, and countless pieces of proper vet bed Im now at a loss as to what to actually let her sleep on. Todays effort was actually turning over Alfie's bit of rubber backed vet bed in his basket and chewing that after borrowing his bed for a short nap this afternoon. Literally she was snoring one minute, I went to load the tumble dryer upstairs and came down to a hole in his bed.

She is in the crate whilst Im at work for three hours every morning, has a nylabone ring (well chewed) a sterilised bone (also well chewed) and a black kong with frozen food in it every morning, so its not as if she isnt able to do something for those three hours. However she isnt just chewing her bedding during that time.

Is there ANYTHING I can put in her crate that is not able to be chewed? I really dont know what to do here, never come across this before.

In a word, NO!

I've been there done it, tried it and failed! By the end of it all, Pasco was in a bare crate! I couldn't even put vet bed in!!!!

I've even had to take vet bed out of Zephyrs crate because Pasco will pull it through the bars and chew it!

This is the beds I have in the kitchen for Pasco and Huds

They can't physically chew it! I've swapped out the lining thats on there for vet bed as it was a bit harsh on Pascos skin when he was at his most poorly. Its not a problem for a normal healthy dog! They can not pull or chew the vet bed, its impossible!

I wish there was a tuffies type insert then for crates as I really cant trust her out of her crate at night. She would probably be okay tbh, however its not my house, it belongs to the landlord which makes me much more cautious.

Well.... they do do crate beds pads... but they aren't chew proof. I think Pasco managed to trash one of those in about 45 seconds flat! Sad They aren't the easiest to chew, but an ardent chewer won't have a problem.

They do however repair them! Wink Thats what I did with ours and now its what Zephyr the non chewer sleeps on.

Honestly, I would put nothing in the crate until such time as they stop chewing stuff. Thats what we ended up with Pasco. He's now nearly 3 and won't chew the house so is trusted out of the crate, but if I left him something chewable he'd have it shredded and possibley eaten in a heart beat.

I don't know if this would work but when Sam was in a major chewing phase I put the vetbed inside a quilt cover that is the cover that goes on a quilt not the quilt itself! I found this stopped him chewing it. You have to make sure the button/popper section is well tucked in/under though so they can't get to it.

Good luck.

Found this but it is in the USA
http://www.k9ballistics.com/shop/Ballistic-Dog-Beds.......Buy-One-And-Be-Done!/Ballistic-Chew-Resistant-Crash-Pad-p85.html&c=2

I have previously seen kevlar dog beds as the nearest thing to chew proof but the home page of K9 Ballistics says that kevlar is not to be used for dog beds as it can cause fatal injuries if chewed.

Could you glue/sew 2 pieces of vetbed together so that Maple can't chew the back of it?

What about a small piece of good quality carpet? A wool one with a cut pile rather than twist so that the strands aren't too long to cause any damage.

i would agree with fee - i would simply take the bedding away if she is going to chew it!!! It may seem harsh to start but its for the best - if she cant be trusted to not chew it and tear it to shreds and ur worried she will swallow it i would take it away - if temptation isnt there then she wont be tempted to do it. Then eventually you could introduce some vet bed when you are around to monitor her and do lots of training and praise her when she just lies on it and tell her off when she starts ripping at it.

Indi was never a bed chewer thank god and she had vet bed to start and enjoyed it then we went onto a small thin dog pillow and now she has a nice deep duvet pillow that moulds around her at night and she loves it!!!

if it were me i would take the bedding away. Indi as a pup use to move her vet bedding and lie on the bottom plastic/metal base of the crate and was quite happy!!

Unfortunately I have the same problem with Charlie, every time I put a new bed in, it gets shredded. He is now on a fleece blanket which seems to have survived so far.

I did consider the Ruff Tuff dog bed but its expensive if it only lasts an hour Laughing Laughing

Actually its quite reasuring that its not just me that this happens to! I accept totally that she is a chewer and although its now less than what it was when she was a tiny pup, shes still doing it. I have been really lucky in that she has never (or had the opportunity tbh) chewed things like furniture or walls/skirtingboards so I consider myself lucky in a way.

I might get the sewing machine out this afternoon and see if I can use a couple of your ideas together. I will try and sew a piece of vetbet ontop of a cut down duvet cover and slide the bottom tray into it. So she wont be able to scrap up the vetbed and turn it over and if I make it tightfitting enough she might not be able to get hold of a big mouthful. It might also only last 20 seconds lol

Interesting about the Kevlar, can you imagine the conv with the vet - and what do you think has caused your dogs blockage......er....kevlar? Vet >> Shocked
