Well last night the site was its busiest ever and the load shot up !!
see the attached image showing how it spiked !
It has become more and more apparent that the only way to retain site speed / responsiveness and keep existing functionality is to upgrade the hardware. I have tweaked what I can but no way of compensating without making severe changes and I don't see that as a way of moving forward tbh
I have been googling and researching a new dedicated server costing and will make a decision later today
This won't be a quick fix as it will take time to have the server built out, configured, secured and then to migrate the content over to it so will still be making some streamlining changes that I have already mentioned such as the removal of the header links that have been migrated into the main site navigation menu header.
Bear with me, I know there does appear to be considerable resentment of me "tinkering" and some of the comments directed either directly at me in posts or via PMs have been extraordinary tbh such as "Site runs better without me" and implying that I shouldn't have any input on the site as its "nothing to do with me" can I just remind those members that although I have periods of none posting, LF was created by me, I look after the server, I do all the admin tasks in the background, It will be me that is going to be spending ever more money keeping the hardware going for no increase in funding (although other members appears to think I am a millionaire funded by 100s of 1000s of subscriptions)
With all the flak that myself and Julie have taken over the course of the last week perhaps I should just shut the site down, but it has emotional connections to us both due to its formation for our labrador Bradley (Yes surprise, surprise we do have a labrador as I have seen comments actually discounting me even being a pet owner !!)
So I am afraid you are stuck with me

well I have done 3 hours more of research and tweaking !
Found quite a few tweaks I could apply to the database configuration to make it use cacheing more effectively and use memory wiser and that seems to have had a very good effect
the site on the whole is much more responsive atm, with the single page dragging down the averages being the main forums index page i.e. the one with the last 10 posts bit at the top.
This is due to the author column (don't go there ) so not much I can do about that
it will take a day or so of benchmarking now to see how these tweaks take effect as mysql uses them so will leave alone now and watch my charts
