I'm sorry, I don't really know about books - I've found this forum covers pretty much everything you could ever want to know about every aspect of a lab's trials and tribulations.
My Blue loves his Kong. I would suggest that you put a search in on the forum and you'll find it brings up loads of threads about the Kong, with loads of recipe suggestions etc.

Books - how about the Perfect Puppy or Puppy School by Gwen Bailey or The Pet Gundog by Les Graham, there's also one called 'What if my dog' but I can't remember who wrote it, quite good for looking up those strange things your dog sometimes does! I find it is quite hard to train from a book though personally I find watching a DVD easier so you can see how it is done in practise.
DVD - Sirius Puppy Training by Dr Ian Dunbar
Kong - just go for a normal one, you don't have to fill it completely everytime anyway and the puppy ones are softer so if yours is a big chewer they may get bits off it. The best thing to try in it at first is some of his own kibble softened, you want him to enjoy it, not get a bad tummy!
