   |
|
Hello again... ! This is getting embarrasing now but the advice you lovely people give really is amazing !
Sacher is 10 weeks now (time has just whizzed past ) and she is starting training classes in 2 weeks time and it said on the letter we got that the puppy needs to be on a lead so i thought it would be a good idea to start getting her properly used to it. She has had it on a couple of times before jsut running around the house and ive held it a couple of times in the back gaden and she just tried to eat it but would happily follow me if i had a treat.
Anyway, today i decided to take her out into the front garden on the lead. So far, Sacher has only been in the smaller back garden because there is a gate which stops her running off. The front garden is big and has a gravel drive and the road it unmade and leads straight out onto a field so there are nop cars or other frightening things. So i put her lead on and she went out of the front door quite happily (something else she has never done before) and onto the grass ( avoiding the gravel because i knew she wouldn't be keen on that) and she went bonkers! She jut kept jumping and leaping and turning trying to get the lead off . Then she would just sit and not move even when i encouraged her to come to me for a trea t. I actually had to pick her up to bring her back inside .
HOW CAN I GET SACHER TO WALK ON A LEAD?!!! I want a dog tjhat i can take on walks- not have to carry everywhere! please help!

Just persevere and she will get used to it - its another new place.
I have only had one dog that I remember who went out first time with no apparent problems but he was a few fries short of a happy meal anyway!
Plenty of praise and yummy treats.
Lucky you live on a 'quiet' road. I live on a busy one and Willow still is unhappy to pass a diesel bus or lorry that is parked with an engine running and as for air brakes!!! Doesnt seem so much of a problem in town thank goodness!

Simba is 8 weeks but will walk on a lead happily. We put one on her the first day we got her and she just walked on it. We have a large back and front garden so I take her for a 10 minute walk around on the lead. She does sometimes sit and refuse to move and has done the twisting thing you described where it is like she is trying to get off the lead. I use distraction with her like you do with a toddler throwing a tantrum.
I point out a car, or one of the children walks in front and calls her with lots of enthusiasm. If these fail I simply lift her up and face her the opposite way (she seems to then forget what she was protesting about). I also use this when she wants to go the opposite way to what I do.
When she walks how I'd like I then give her lots of praise. My sister has a 13 week old choc lab and she has only just started putting a lead on her and has encountered similar problems but with perseverance in the last week 'Sofie' has improved. Obviously, Simba may well start to play up again in this dept. but she appears to have adjusted well to the lead we've used it so much for toilet training she's had to.

As the others have said perseverance is the key, remember its a BIG scary world when your only 10 weeks old, when she sits and refuses to move just let her and use encouraging words to get her to move, never force her at that age, she`ll be all the more scared otherwise.
You have a couple of weeks before puppy classes start, I`m sure you`ll have Sacher walking on lead before then, then wait til she starts to pull on it! , once she realises how exciting that big world is there`l be no stopping her

Our girl will be 11 weeks old tomorrow and we took her to her first puppy class last night. We have put the lead on her before and let her drag it around/play with it, etc. I've also picked it up and walked along with her, and she didn't like it much, but last night she was so distracted that she ignored the lead completely and behaved so well.
