Teeth cleaning is a personal choice. some people do it some don't.
You can start it at any age.
Personally, i don't see much need for it to be a regular thing, more so if you feed your dog on dry food and give him teeth cleaning bones such as raw bones etc.
Goodluck, they usually wiggle when they have it done

i bought toothbrush and paste for ruby but have never used them - she is 7 months old today and her teeth are whiter than white with no doggie breath at all - she is fed dry too with the occasional bone

Cooked chicken bones are a no no as they can splinter, but raw bones just crunch up.
Corbie has brilliant white teeth and his breath doesn't smell, so it really depends on whether you need to clean them or not.

It's not essential no.
I honestly, would not bother with it. Or, even just do it maybe once every 6 months.
When he's older get a few raw bones from the butchers to let him munch and crunch on. Really tasty for the dog and keeps teeth clean!

CJ and my Westie are both raw fed and never need their teeth cleaned, Cindy`s were pretty rough (tartar etc) before she went to a raw diet, now they are beatifully pearly white
