I have been feeding my 4 dogs on Kirkland chicken and rice, for a while now, anyway its quite high in protein.
And Jake is quite overweight so I have tried cutting down on his portions but he is always hungry, and sometimes goes away on walks to raid bins and hunts rabbits
Can anyone recommend a good economical replacement for me to try, keeping in mind I have 4 dogs to feed
Just googled the costco food, is it the kirkland one? If so, i don't think it looks too bad actually.. in my opinion. You could always try autarky, also available from costco.. it sort of goes by the same-ish principles as Burns, but i think uses meat meal (as does the costco one) and is maize based, rather than brown rice. A lot of people think that's a really good food anyway, for about £15 per sack in costco i think
How high in protein is it? if its high in protein it is probably also high in fat. For an average pet adult dog I would recommend a maintenance food. Look for protein levels between 18-22% on maintenance. If protein levels in the food you are currently feeding are between 26-31% its too much. Those kind of levels are for active and working dogs. Dogs that are fed high nutrient foods but only have a moderate energy level will gain weight.
How much does he weigh and how much are you feeding him? you may not be feeding enough (easy mistake).
As for economic foods, there are loads out there. Experiment. I use Nutro and ProPlan which are pocket friendly. Many people on this forum will recommend Burns. My dogs did terrible on both Burns and James Wellbeloved so just use whatever works best for your dogs.
Hi yes its the Kirkland chicken and rice and it has 26% protien.
Jake weights 46kg and Kel is 35kg, they are meant to get for that weight between 2.1/2 and 3.1/2 cups a day, but it seems a lot so they get 1 cup twice a day and they are still overweight
Jake and kel both a very greedy dogs they bolt their food.
ooh i read it was 22% maybe it is time to switch!!
have a search on here for autarky, the ones trickster mentioned are good too.. more expensive than autarky though, i personally feed burns (my choice) and don't find it too pricey for 2 dogs!!
Not sure about Kirkland dog food, but i feed my 4 cats Kirkland cat food from Costco. They thrive on it and their coats and extreemly shiney, and they are all of a very healthy weight (Apart from 1, due to him being on steriods)
As for my dog, i feed him Autarky. I also buy this from Costco. My Lab loves it. Shiney coat, and he's not overweight. Perfect weight infact. Never had any problems with Autarkys and its not over-priced either.
Does the same rule apply to puppy food? I feed Nutrience (dry) which has 28% protein and 17% fat but the ingredients are all "natural" ie. chicken meal, brewers rice, ground corn, chicken fat, dried beet pulp etc. I was thinking of switching her to adult food when she was around 12 months. We've been told she's small for a lab and she weighs around 23kg at the moment (she's 10 months)
I assumed growing pups needed more protein than adult dogs and will make sure this is reflected in the adult variety when it comes to switching.
Hope I'm doing the right thing.....she looks fine to me.
