Hi All

I'm just about to change Charlie on to adult food - he's almost 6 months.

He is a big dog and although I've not had him weighed for a few weeks he must be around 23 - 24kg.

I would like to feed him half meat and half dried. I've read on here that a lot of people use Chappie, so I have just given him a tin for his tea. He has wolfed it down so as long as it doesn't upset his tum in the next day or two then we'll go for that. I've also got some adult Burns which I know he is ok with.

What I need help with please, is the amount to feed. On the tin of Chappie, it says give 4 tins a day!!!!!!!!!!!!! obviously with no mixer or anything but it still seems a lot.

I intend to give Charlie one tin per day. Please can anyone tell me how much Burns he needs to make up a days feed, as the amount on the pack is just for the dried. He will have two meals per day. Is it ok to mix the Chappie and Burns together for each meal or do I need to feed one of meat and one of dried.

Sorry for all the questions, but Charlie is quite a 'stocky' dog (polite for being a bit tubby!!!!) and I don't want him to get fat.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Wendy and Charlie

Hiya Wendy,

Glad you've got Charlie on adult food now Smile

Chappies really good too.. if a little pongy...!!!

I reckon, if 1 tin of chappy is 1/4 of the daily amount, you should feed 3/4 of the Burns daily amount.. if you get me.. say Charlies 25kg, his full amount of burns would be 250g.. so 180-190g per day? I think? For starters anyway, obviously that's only a recommendation by Burns, if he's going skinny/chunky you'll have to adjust accordingly.

How are his little legs now?

As Charlie needs to lose a bit of weight at least until he`s able to have unrestricted exercise, I`d advise feeding less than is on the recommendations, although he`ll look at you with those pleading golden eyes!!, don`t be takin in by it mummy! Wink Laughing

Like Clare 1/4 and 3/4, I would maybe use half the Burns rather than 3/4, that way he gets a little less and that will help his weight.

Nothing to say you can`t mix half a tin of the Chappie with Charlie`s Burns, that way he gets it with both meals Very Happy

There are 3 sizes of chappie- the normal 'beans' size (400g), a larger tin(800g) and a super tin- double the size of the large tin(just over 1kg) (800g tins used to be about 86p each)
I used to give 1 and 1/2 tins to 2 of large tins a day which suited Jet til he went off it but he had eaten it for years. This was supplemented with shapes or such as they were the only type biscuit he would eat- out walking. He wouldnt touch mixer or other dried food- fussy dog. The four tins sounds like the normal 'beans size' I havent got a tin for reference.

Oscar has two main meals a day.... half a tin of chappie and what works out to be a mug full of dry mix for each meal..... he loves it

We introduced Oscar to chappie over a few days so not to upset his stomach.... just a couple of soons full and then gradually increased it.
