Hi there!
I'm following some really helpful advice to help my six month old lab manage his stiff back legs. One lady said her dog responded well to Burns food and I have in the last week been changing Bosun over from Iams to burns. The change over has gone well but I'm unsure if I'm feeding him enough coz although he is notoriously greedy he does seem to be scavenging even more than usual. I've been giving him his usual 3 meals a day which I plan to cut down to two in a few weeks (didn't want too much change at once).

The info that came with the Burns recommended 200g which is what I've been giving him but it does say that in some cases it may need to be amended. Bosun is on limited exercise and I think because of this he's been looking stockier than I would expect at his age. Do you think he's just getting used to it all or could he be hungry? Also, his poo is much blacker and hard (sorry if to much info). Is this normal on burns or could he be a bit constipated. Sorry this question is so long!

Thanks

Elisa and Bosun

I think they often seem a bit peckish when you first change over to Burns, as the recommended feeding amounts are soooo much smaller than other brands. However, I think this is because the ingredients are far more concentrated, and your doggie will soon adapt to these smaller meals - as long as you don't give in to those puppy eyes 'I'm soooo hungry, how could you feed me soooo little, your dinner looks sooooo nice compared to mine' hehehe, it's very hard - I know!!!! In fact, with Dexter I now feed him quite a bit LESS than the recommended amount, as that's all he needs, and he's not excessively hungry either.

Poo wise.. my 2 do fairly dark, little bricks of poos on burns. very easy to pick up Laughing on other brands dexter's were more erm... light and fluffy!!!! According to you are what you eat last night, in people, dark hard poos are what you're after LOL

ditto on the poo score here Laughing and the smaller amount I changed ruby over at about 10 weeks and she was scavenging more for a while until she got used to it.

I feed Ruby 225g a day she is 15kg and the feedsheet burns sent me when I emailed them states 10-15g per kg for 6-12 month pups. I was feeding 20g per kg before she was 6 months old. I think that means either Bosun weighs less that Ruby or Burns have advised you a smaller amount based on Bosuns individual needs. Ruby is 6 months too.

I noticed the info on the pack gives bandings of food so I emailed Burns and asked for more detail feeding guidelines which they did and they were the above mentioned based on weight.

Hi I feed Max burns and I found that I had to increase (only slightly) the amount I gave him as he appeared to be a bit skinnier.

There's less waste from Burrns so the poo issue is normal. Smaller and harder = easier to clean up Laughing

Hi Elisa,

If you are unsure as to what to do, phone the Burns helpline. They are really helpful. Herbie was a young adult dog when we transferred him on to Burns. The advice I was given by the helpline was to feed him the High Oats variety, which has more fibre and makes the dog feel fuller. Herbie, like Bosun, acted as though he was hungry at first, but he soon adjusted and is fine now. I read somewhere that if you add water to the dry food, it makes the dog feel fuller. Certainly worth a try. Definitely give the Burns helpline a call. Regarding the "poo" issue, yes, they are much firmer and darker. When Herbie was being fed Pedigree, he was doing quite a few poos a day, but on Burns, it's just two to three small ones. Burns doesn't contain "rubbish" ingredients and so the body absorbs more and so there is less waste to be passed.
