Hi, I am new to lab Forums, I am hoping for some help. Rolo is my first labrador and he is 6 months old.
Is there something wrong with giving him Hills science plan puppy large bred? I have seen a few people say its not good.
I started to give him it when I got him as the vets recommended it, he does love it and seems happy enough but does have VERY smelly poo, is this caused by science plan???
I have seen a few other food mentioned such as Fish4food and Burns but don't know if I should change.
Thank you for any help.

Welcome!
Luna is my first pooch and she was on Hills Puppy (not the large breed) from about 4months old to 9months. She stopped eating the Chicken flavour after a few months so we switched to Lamb. She always had very smelly poops, always soft, large, she went a lot and often was rather windy. I thought that this was just a pup thing. Once she switched onto adult Proplan Salmon food at about 9/10months the wind disappeared and the poops became solid and regularly twice a day.
I think the Hills was too rich for her and still now she has a problem with eating Chicken based dry and wet foods.
Some people switch dogs to adult food at 6 months old. With hindsight I would have switched Luna too as she ended up gaining too much weight being on pup stuff so long.

Hi there Jools
Welcome to LF.....Pics of Rolo please!!
We are just coming to the end of our last 15kg bag of Hills, and are switching to Skinners Field and Trial Duck for a few reasons...
Although Beetle is pretty happy with Hills, the reason that it does not have many fans is (I understand) because the company do a great deal of animal testing - ie overfeeding dogs to see reaction on organs, changing the ratio of ingredients and testing etc....
And then the other thing of course is the COST!!
I was quite keen on Fish 4 dogs and also looked into Challenge, but the pong of fishy food in the house is pretty hard to cope with. We are settling on Fish4dog for treats (100% fish skin) and then Skinners - mainly because the ingredients look very balanced and if you buy the Field and Trial variety - then it is VAT free.
It will be interesting to see the change in The Bugs poos (many of us here are poo obsessed!)....no question that there is a lot of them, and often a bit errrr sticky.....
at 10 months - he has coped well with pup food till now - seems a good weight, but very much looking forward to the switch

Coal was on hills to start with when he first came home and its was an alright food but there are better for the same price. His poops were very yellow and not of a great consistancy.
We switched him to burns and he was alot better. poops firm and he did well on it, altho a little on the skinny side.
I then switched him to skinners when Finn was coming home as it was cheaper and he's done really well on it - they both have
there are many foods but you just need to find one that suits your dog
