Judges: Diana Harrison, Chris Marshall, David Breach, Ron Jeffrey & Roger wade
Allington Farm, Offham, Near lewes
We ran in the UGS Kent & East Sussex Open
Allan ran Jade - his first Open test, really proud of him for having the guts, till you've done it you can't imagine the jump up from NDNH/Novice. I ran Mallie-mooster.
Five tests:
Briefly:
Test One
Walk up. Only two dogs but judge is a heelwork fanatic and wanted to walk miles with the other competitors following on the left so like a walked up trial with people going in and out the 'line' from the gallery. Two blinds each for the walk up, one to your own side and one 'across' the line.
Test Two
Blind no shot over two stock fences at an angle across a large field. Easy possibility to run round on the way back as it followed a track with dummies down for dog to swop to if that way inclined.
Test Three:
Long Mark - maybe 200 yards, unusual for down south, we tend to have less long long stuff and more trappy tricky stuff so was lovely.
Test Four:
Mark thrown on water at 45 degrees to handler. Wanted blind with no shot downa side of the lake and into the wood... with various bunkers along the way... Then water mark.
Test Five:
Blind about 140 yards up the side of a wood and just into the wood so dog goes out of sight to pick. Turns out was slightly off the ground in there making it interesting
Mallie and Jade ran to the best of their ability. Mallie was a few marks off the cards (scoring 19, 17, 20, 16, 9) and Jadey had a couple of zeros, but its all about learning and about the future right now for us here (although who doesn't kick themselves when something has cocked up like my '9' - gutted!) !
The run off was as dramatic as a run off gets. Between Grham Home and Dan Higgs - a long mark over the brow of a hill. Absolutely picture perfect both dogs did it. After a long debate the judges had to have a SECOND run off as they just couldn't split them on it. They made it super unbelievably hard and poor old Dan's young dopg (just two) failed it, but Graham knowing he had nothing to lose could handle and drive the dog and just sneeked it after a bit of a battle... so came out on top! SO exciting!
(forgive me I've accidentally binnned the running order as regards details!)
Open was won by Mike Smith and Laborie Zulu
2nd was Gill dawson and Teaser Teal
3rd was Graham Home
4th Dan Higgs (Nudges Natasha)
COM: Rueben Corbett and Oakvalley Blackjack

Thanks for the report Di. I quite like the sound of that test. Well done with Mallie - a very good set of scores other than the blip.
I've only run in one test this year very early on, and these posts are enthusing me to dig the schedules out and have a look for one or two to have a run in.
Thanks - obviously we didn't set the world on fire but it was an extremely nice, well run day with all sorts of drama, some occured too in the Novice run off so it was a day of thrills and spills!
Matt, we have a lovely lovely Open on Sat 18th July if you fancy a wander down West sussex way ... It will be fabulously organised....

Thanks Di. I'm in a team event at Holkham that weekend so will have to pass, although the greatly reduced pressure of not having team members reliant on our scores is very appealing!
I am jolly glad we still have a year of puppy tests ahead, and then plently of Novices - Open sounds scarily HARD! (It was a long time ago that I ran Fife in a few Opens, and I had forgotten just how much of a difference there is between Novice and Open! )
