Hello everyone,
I need some help! Ok I don't have a lab, I have a Goldie (11 weeks) I love labs too! I need some advice on car safety. I am at the moment putting Presley in the boot - he can see out the window OK but he is growing so fast he will soon be able to get over the seat into the back of the car. I really don't like leaving him loose in the boot - what do you advise? I was thinking of a car harness but he will grow out of it so fast - is it worth it? I don't mind getting a wire cage but I have a Corsa so it needs to be able to fit in the boot as when the seats are down the back isn't flat so a cage would wobble all over the place. He has to go for his second injection on Thursday and I'm dreading it!

I think you can get crates for the car, not to sure though, something that is`nt enormous but will take Presley when he goes out etc. Hopefully someone who has one will be able to help you.

Re the car harness, Presley will grow so quickly it won`t take long for him to fill a large one, as I recall they have a fair amount of expansion/reduction room, so you could go for a larger one Smile

car harness I got ex small first then a med and have an ex large too - I got them from e-bay for about £5 each so all it £15v for 3 - hi craft ones have lots of straps for expansion...............................

Thanks for all your help - even though it's a Goldie I got! I like the idea of a dog guard but where do I get them from. Also, do they need specialist fitting? I've looked on lots of internet pet sites but there doesn't seem to be anything like that on any of them. In the meantime, I'm off to Pets Are Us to get a little harness - see how we get on with that!

I got a dog guard from argos, it said it should fit all hatch back cars but i couldn't get it to fit mine Sad

PAH sell dog guards too.

We had concerns for our lab. We were told about a "Dog Bag" Crate for the car.

They are not cheap ours was £90. It's basically a collapsable tent that goes in the boot. It has anchor clips for the anchor points in the car and a velcro bottom stops it sliding.

The advantage is the netting over the top stops the dog from seeing to much and stops them jumping about and also reflects the heat, ideal in the summer.

You also get to keep your car cleanish, check out www.dog-bag.co.uk only other thing, consider the size to your car. I have Scenic and mine is snug fit.

When we first got Bella this was something we were wondering about but for 3 months-17 weeks I think we are gonna leave it until a few more months. Saying that it won't be that long as she does grow over night, I'm sure. Very Happy

We started by taking her on little car journeys and making the journey longer so she can get used to it.
Now she jumps in the boot and when it's time to get out she just sits there. Laughing

Just a shame it wasn't a bit safer.

I had a dog guard from Argos . It kept falling down on top of my dogs as we were going along (GGrrr). I suppose you get what you pay for Rolling Eyes

Most car companies do their own one, if you can't find a universal one that fits.

I would suggest a dog car harness. There is a fair bit of adjustability in them, even the large dog ones. Failing that get a dog guard fitted across the boot. I would no more carry unrestrained dogs in the car that I would unrestrained children! They could be flung forward, injuring themselves and possibly also any front seat passengers.

Also, if they become excitable they could start leaping around if not anchored well, and then cause an accident.
