Hi all,
I can see that most of you like Burns or Autarky. They both sound very good. Kyra has been fed on Royal Canin, but I haven't noticed anyone here feeding it to their labs. Can anyone share their views on it as I am new to this and not sure what to look for in food, apart from the obvious nutrition factor, no additive, etc...
I look forward to your views and suggestions.
many thanks in advance

I use Royal Canin with Quarrington as this is what his breeder recommended. He has done really well on it and I am really pleased.I also know quite a few other breeders of different breeds that use it and are also pleased with the way their dogs have developed.

Thank you Quarry! I wonder why it seems that not many talk about it on this site.
My breeder recommends it and Kyra seems to be doing very well on it.
I am picking her up on Friday! Yippee!!! I know I am going on about it in every post... He he he... Can't help it!

hi, naturediet is in my opinion probably the best food available at the moment, but it is pricey so I chose only feed it to my dogs for the first 6-8 months then swap to burns, however I would recommend reading the nutritional guides available on their website. www.naturediet.net , it gives you a good general background on what goes into foods, how they are made, what the effects of the process are, what the ingredients really mean, and whats good/bad.
personally I just like to look at the number of ingredients too, the more natural a feed is surely it will have less ingredients?
I like to avoid foods with lots of pointless fillers and things such as maize, wheat etc.

Hi Andrew,
thank you! It is a very informative site and the food definitely sounds good. Royal Canin seems to have soya and maize that the nature diet site mentions is not too great or rather useful for a healthy dog's diet.
Do you know anything about Royal Canin' food, or know of anyone using it and what is their experience? I would have rather not chance her diet so soon, but I want her to have the best! Money is no object...
Thank you

Murphy was on Royal Canin when we picked him up and was really healthy and happy. When I started to take him to puppy training the first question we were asked was what we feed our dogs. When I mentioned Royal Canin she recommended that we change him to JWB or Arden Grange. Apparently, Royal Canin has added colours and preservatives. I wanted to put him on Naturediet but she said it doesn't have enough protein, although, the literature I have read recommends the lower the protein the better. He is doing really well on JWB but when he is 12 months old I am going to change him to Naturediet.

Unfortunately the advice of your training club is totally incorrect. to compare the protein levels etc in wet food like naturediet to dry feed you have to remove the water content from the equasion. i worked through the maths on here before, but believe me the answer is that naturediet has about 44% protien (you times what it says on the pack by 4 to work out the actual protien levels).
The whole issue of what levels of protien etc. are best is a very large minefield, and there are a lot of myths about. e.g. a dog fed a high protein diet will be hyperactive ... rubbish, ask anyone feeding raw diet which will have similar protein levels if their dogs are hyper.... aditives especially colourants and added sugars in poor feeds are the primary cause of hyper puppies, after eating naturediet mine are zonked out like an old man after his sunday lunch
There is also specific research to show that dogs fed on higher protein diets 30-40%+ are far less susceptable to injury from their exercise and knocks and bumps, indeed it is specifically recommended working dogs are fed high protein diets as it is proven to improve performance and concentration. For an active pup running around, bumping into things and developing diet is the number 1 priority. The other thing you will find about a high quality feed is they will poop less as there is less rubbish in the feed.
for skeletal and chd key issues are weight, keeping the dogs lean - which you will find naturediet does, and calcium levels, which again you will find ND has reatively low calcium content which is provided by secific ground bone added to the feed to the correct amount. (necessary as the meat content is meat and not ground up abatoir leftovers).

Something I notice no ones mentioned yet is Royal Canin uses animal testing, its not just trying the food out on dogs either, but as with all things if the pup is doing well on it then leave him/her with it.
I can`t recommend a particular food cos I feed my two raw, but if you want to switch, do it slowly over a period of time to lessen the effect on Kyra`s tummy, if you find after a while (make it several weeks) that it does`nt appear to be working for her then you can either try something else or go back to Royal Canin.
Have to say Royal Canin is awfully expensive, the vet put a couple of my cats on the urinary one, cost me £36 for a 6kg bag!!, she said one should stay on it for the rest of his life (he was under a year at the time!) luckily both are fine now and back on normal food, thank goodness!
