Aloe products - your thoughts please

A friend of mine has recently started selling a certain world recognised make of Aloe products.

Now I have used Aloe on my skin for years i.e. breaking a leaf of the plant and rubbing the sap in when I get sunburnt, or in the form of a cream. However, never used it on animals though. You can actually buy a pack called a Vet Pack with all various aloe products for use on animals in and before I spend just over £100 on this I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or experiences on using Aloe products on animals?

Sorry but I've only just seen this.

My sister used an Aloe product (can't remember it's name tho) on her lab Millie last year. Millie had dry and flaky skin and sis was advised to rub this stuff into Millies coat at least once a day.
This advice came from someone who hadn't seen Millie and just took my sisters description of the condition as basis for the recommendation.

The stuff certainly did appear to do the trick but it was expensive and there were probably much cheaper alternatives out there to be honest that would have done the same thing.
Sorry to sound a little sceptical my I sometimes feel these remedies are a bit of a money spinner.

I use 'Aloe and oatmeal' Shampoo on my pets, which smells lovely and makes their coats gorgeous Very Happy

Also at work we use Aloe Vera Gel for dogs with certain types of wound and burns.
We've found it to be great stuff for some things but be sure to research suitability for each condition, we had one client come in with a cat with a huge melting ulcer in it's eye that the owner had made a million times worse by using it Rolling Eyes

I'm sure you wouldn't do that but just an example of where you really shouldn't put it!

Aloe vera sap worked wonders on my bites i got out in St Lucia, so soothing, the people who worked on the resort used to give me a freshly cut aloe leaf. I also use a shampoo on Lucy that has aloe vera in it and find that it agrees with her, doesn't make her skin flaky and gives her a nice sheen.
I like aloe vera! Very Happy

I rate aloe vera VERY HIGHLY. Have had brilliant results with it.

My charlie boy had a nasty wound and I was not in a position to get to a vets at that particular point in time - happened on holiday on a saturday night so I applied aloe vera gel which I always take with me as first aid.

I kept applying it twice daily until the monday morning when I decided that a significant amount of wound healing had taken place for me to decide to continue with the aloe vera and avoid the vets.

I get mine from an online company (would have to look up the name) but it only cost me £5 for a big tube and it is 99% pure aloe.

so it doesnt have to be expensive and I have continued to use the stuff ever since this particular bad wound.

one of my customers dogs has bad skin, the owner has spent £500 on the dog with no success. She now uses the aloe vera and is really happy as the wounds caused by the nibbling have all but gone away. (very bad scarring tissue caused from years of nibbling... two weeks into treatment they are almost gone)

ONE WORD OF WARNING though... my customer who uses it - her son is a dermatlogist. he advises to watch out for any symptoms of reaction if using continuously. swelling and redness. This doesnt happen to all dogs/people that use it but some have a delayed allergic reaction.

I've tried their products on me with varying degrees of success.

However, no names, but I know of a number of breeders who have used their products (assuming I am guessing the company you are talking about) and had what I can only quantify as some very interesting results - PM me if you want more info Wink

I had totally forgotten about this thread that I had started but thank you for your replies.

Rouble recently developed a bald patch on his back, how I am not quite sure but have been putting Aloe Gell on it which might have helped a bit as the hair is now growing back and black thankfully. Vet said she has seen black dogs with bald patches and the fur has grown back white!! Also, Rouble's coat has not been in the greatest condition recently as he is moultingut he also tends to have a bit of flakey skin which shows up alot on a black dog. but did give him a an Aloe shampoo after discovering the blad patch and his coat looks alot better.

Having read some of your comment above about flakey skin about makes me wonder whether its worthwhile trying Rouble on the Aloe Gell drink.

Mollydolly I nearly always have Aloe Gell to hand for my own use, it is fab for burns and things. I say nearly always - was away last weekend and forgot to pack it but could have done with it as did something really stupid on Sunday morning - picked up my hot straighteners by the plates .... wasn't looking what I was doing Embarassed

Well both Rouble and I have started taking the Aloe Gel drink this week.

Must admit it tastes awful even though its supposed to be orange flavoured, but will have to wait and see as to whether it helps Roo's flakey skin

The only shampoo I can use on the Pood without her getting itchy and flakey is an Aloe shampoo which is made up of 84% Aloe Vera. Poods need bathing regularly, unlike Labs and it was becoming a nightmare, as she would scratch herself silly for a few days after each bath but since finding this shampoo, her coat and skin are lovely and healthy. Very Happy

I've used Aloe Vera Gel on sunburn before but I might have to look at getting some better quality stuff, as the one I had was cheap and sticky...it did ease the pain a little though.

A wee tip Jules - buy an Aloe Vera plant from your local garden centre instead. Probably about the same price (if not cheaper) than any gel or cream, and it works wonders on burns and sunburn - just break off a leaf and squeeze the goo out. I've done daft things like Sam too (getting a dish out of the oven without gloves Shocked

- must be a blonde thing... ) and I just used the gel from the plant, wrapped the afflicted fingers and gel in clingfilm for a bit and it was better very quickly Very Happy

The plant looks very pretty too and is quite easy to keep Wink
