On another tread someone asked about back up for rescue dogs who have been abused or have had a very bad start in life, and support for the new adopters.
We have a wonderful charity in our area who work with any dog, here is a little bit about them
As with people, more and more dogs find our lifestyle too stressful. The aim of our charity is to help these dogs and there owners achieve a harmonious life together. Some of the cases we deal with are classed as last chance dogs. Which means that these dogs could be on a death sentence if their behaviour does not improve. Facilities to rehabilitate these dogs are virtually non-existent. Our long-term aim is to buy land and build a rehabilitation centre where these dogs and potential new owners can be retrained together. (Out of acorns large oak trees grow).
Our aim is to raise funds by donations, grants sponsorship, car boot sales, demonstrations, coffee mornings dances, and quiz nights. We have a Buy-a-Brick campaign and you can also donate online.
You can join our free mailing list to receive our newsletter online, and receive details of our next fundraising events. Please e-mail us at info@spiritofthedog.org.uk Or use the link at the top of the page.
Objects of the Charity
To promote humane behaviour towards dogs by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for dogs which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage and to educate the public especially in matters pertaining to safety around dogs with children and to dog welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering towards dogs.
Activities of the charity
Offering shelter or sanctuary for the benefit of dogs, which are in need of psychological attention; providing psychological treatment and care for dogs; actively seek new homes for "rescued" dogs. Provide medical attention where appropriate
We would be very pleased with any donations however small. If you are local to us and have any items we could sell to raise funds please call 07933792714 and speak to Mal our car boot specialist and Treasurer.

WHat a good idea, I`ve seen a program on tv where, in the US they get prisoners to rehabilitate and train dogs that have been on "death row" in the pound thyey then go into the community a assistance dogs, the prisoners do wonders with them and they in turn do a lot to help them turn their lives round too.
I've seen that programme as well Mary, it is marvelous as it is a 2 way thing. Saw one where he had a husky, great escaper, think it took him 45 minutes to have the dog come to him when he let it loose. The last test was the dog had to sit and stay whilst the trainer walked away and he passed.
I had posted that I would like to see more support with rescues and I didn't mean it in a negative way as majority of rescues do stay with their forever homes and I know most rescues offer support but there are certain circumstances where a rescue does need something like spirit of the dog, but unfortunately it is down to money isn't it?
I've got my hotel to give me all the quilts when they are being replaced asnd I'm popping them over to spalding to Alisons Lincolnshire pet and wildlife sanctuary.
It is jut sometimes you do see rescues returned ....why don't know..... although I have seen some rescues with dogs of nervous disposistion state that any prospective owner comes to the kennels over a period of time so that the dog gets to know them before they are allowed to take them....good idea.

Some people don't like to ask for help, they feel they are letting the dog down or feel stupid, so this is another avenue

Having spoken to one of the behaviourists today, they are more than happy for people phone them and travel to them with a problem dog.
They don't charge an extortionate amount and they are hoping to build a centre where they can take in aggressive dogs and turn them around.
