   |
|
I knew I shouldn't have It was asking for trouble But in searching for something in particular on the net I ended up trawling the adverts of several stud dog advertising websites. I am listed on one of them myself but hadn't really read many of the other adverts....
I am just gobsmacked, I quote some of the text and requirements to come to their dog:
" Must be on day 12 of her season "
(beaky Mrs Interferring here had to write and explain about ovulation being variable and how generalising like that could be harmful to her dog and the bitch visiting....
)
" Must stay over whilst being mated " (why?)
" Must be chocolate and chunky (but not fat) "
" Siring Cream pups NOW! "
" Regularly plays with other dogs but not found one yet he wants to mate with - maybe its YOURS! "
" I don't mind if they are KC registered or not but their vaccinations must be up to date "
" Bitch needs to be good with small animals and children - stud dogs sight, mobility and heart is good "
I suppose it explains a lot about why so many matings and litters run into problems. I just thought I'd seen it all until I read some of the very varied ads! I stress I have no problem with internet stud dog sites, As I say I use them myself and there are excellent dogs and adverts on there too from very reputable dogs - but I really feel for the novice bitch owner when faced with the like of the phrases above - and believe me there were plenty more to smile at if it wasn't so sad.... ;-(

Must write bitch a heartfelt love letter
Must bring bitch flowers and chocolates
Must take Bitch to dinner and pay for starter main and desert
Must be prepared to marry bitch, if made pregnant.
Must be good father to pups, take them out for nice days out, bottle feed, express bitch's milk.
Must also be able to play a musical instrument as well as have a good job.

Toe curling reading isn't it?
I know of someone who rang one of these 'stud owners' whose advice was "bring your bitch over in the middle of her season, they can play in the garden whilst we have a cup of tea and a chat and we'll hear soon enough when they're at it"

Oh Nicky yes.... thats a good word 'toecurling' !
I suppose they are written in good heart, just ignorance. But I have to say I was quite amazed! What amazes me more is any of these sort of dogs actually get USED. The bitch owners can scan down to well written correct adverts and see how 'the other half do it' for pretty much the same stud fees reading the adverts at length. I wonder if anyone then dismisses the good adverts and goes to these people and their dogs for service?

I saw one that said that the stud dog hadn't had the hip scoring etc done because they hadn't been planning to breed from him
Have to say that none of the items in Matthew's list would have had any impact on Poppy

Surely you know Di that all Labrador start by sireing black? They start to sire chocolates when it ink starts to get low in the inkwell and whenit finally runs out that when we get the yellow things.
I thought everyone knew that!
Regards, John

Maybe some folk are intimidated by the 'proper' breeders? Especially if they haven't carried out any health tests and almost certainly if their bitch is not KC registered. That'll be where these stud dog owners will get their business and as we all know this side of the breeding business is huge.

Duh John! And there was me thinking Cream Labradors by way of the 'paint pallete method of breeding' (MRW may not have mentioned that route....) were created by mating 'silver' labradors to 'golden' ones ??
