To All,

I've just run through another test (on a copy of this site) and it was very successful. I think it only failed to import something like 1.5% of the posts from the site before the crash.

I would like to ask a favour... could I have a few volunteers to have a good browse round the test site to try and find any problems that may have appeared as a result? If you would like to volunteer please PM me.

If all goes well with the testing then we would like to do this for real tonight at 18:00 and the site shouldn't be down for more than 10-15 minutes while we do this (I'll put a further post up when confirmed).

So volunteer away! Laughing

Cheers...

Stuart

We won't be going ahead with the import of the posts from the old forum tonight....

While the import of the posts was ok (with a few minor errors) it was not possible to search any of these posts. Which brings us to the next problem.... Sad To make these posts searchable will mean taking the website offline for maybe 12 hours or more.

Don't panic! We are looking at breaking this down into smaller chunks. During the loading of each chunk we will point the website to a temporary database so that the website is never really down although any posts during that time will be lost when we point the website back to it's proper database.

Once we have more information and some more accurate timings we will let everyone know. Smile

Firstly... Apologies if the server has been slow for the past hour or so but I've just completed the latest test of the forum import.

Secondly apologies for the length of this post but I thought i would get it all typed up in one hit. Smile

I've just finished the test and as far as I can tell everything is looking great. The searching of the old posts appears to be working and everyones post numbers now include what they posted before the site crashed.

Could I ask for a few volunteers again to run some tests on the er.. test site just to make sure I haven't broken anything. Wink I think we should be testing the following...

1. Searching of the "Archive" forum where all the posts have been imported to ensure that the search works as expected.
2. Check post numbers for your user to see if they look right.
3. Check for posts by yourself to make sure that your name is showing against your posts.
4. Some random checks to make sure that threads are reading in the correct order and not out of place.

If I don't hear of any show stopping problems by the time I get home tomorrow I shall do this for real on this site. I'll start at around 5pm, backup what we have already (in case it goes pete tong!), import all of the old user accounts (if you have re-registered don't worry nothing will change with your account), then import all of the old posts. Based on the tests tonight the whole process shouldn't take more than 60-90 minutes. I will point this website at the test database while the import is running so everyone can still get their "fix" Wink but everything posted in that time will be lost when we switch back to the real database.

Please send me a pm if you can spend a little time testing tonight and i will send back the address for the test website. Please let me know asap as I don't want to break the site after only a couple of weeks of it being running again! Wink

Oh and one last thing... even if you changed your username on the new site it won't matter as the posts will still be registered to you. If you have changed your email address however your posts "may" get lost so if you are using a different email address on the new site please change it back until we get the import done for real so that your posts can be accredited to you. Wink

Many many thanks in advance!

Stuart
