I have a question about the dog shows that are at agricultural shows like the Fife Show this weekend. How does it work? Are they for the hardcore show types? Is it all serious and stuff ?? or is it for the pet owners for fun?

There are two sections I noted in the programme. One is all about the pedigree dog and the other is the novelty classes like waggy tail etc.

So how does it work? Do you pitch up with your pup on your regular lead and have a go, or is it taken more seriously than that? I mean the pedigree section of course. How do they know that your dog is registerd with the kennel club?

These types of shows are for fun. The novelty classes are for those wishing to enjoy their day out and have fun with their dog! Go along to enter these with a normal collar and lead.
The pedigree classes are for those again wishing to have a bit of fun, and those practising what they have learnt at ringcraft in a showy environment. I would use a slip/show lead in these classes, but i'm sure you can go in your normal collar and lead. But the show lead will help to show your dog properly. The judges are looking at conformation and movement, temprement in the ped classes.

Go along enter on the day and have fun! Very Happy

You just go along and enter on the day. For the pedigree classes you don't have to prove that you dog is KC registered, it just has to look like one!! These classes are like the ones you would get at an open show but they are fun and a chance to try your dog out to see if they like it. You usually get some nice treats and a rosette is your placed.
Give it a go I'm sure Huds will be fine!

I'm a bit wary of it being all very serious! Would certainly enjoy the novelty classes as who wouldn't want to take my handsome boy home????

The other classes... hmm... well prolly not for Huds, he has covered my house in his winter clothes!! I've read that showing your pooch off without his coat isn't the done thing!!! Wink

Feebarn, you are making me chuckle... you are worried that this is too serious, and worrying that the Gundog Club might be too serious. I feel you need to start taking YOURSELF more seriously Wink Wink Wink

These shows with those sort of classes are absolutely teeming with people showing for fun and often the first time. Just go and enjoy and yes enter on the day.

just a quick note - a pedigree dog is just one who has both parents of the same breed. A kennel club registered dog is sort of the 'one step up' where those parents can be certified and the litter registered.

So pedigree just means - a labrador or a wolfhound and not a cross or mongrel.

Good luck and have fun

Di

I was wondering exactly the same thing, we seem to have loads of these types of show coming up in our area. I was wondering about the pedigree thing as Tilly isn't KC registered but Di has answered my question. I might go along and enter in a couple of these, the worst thing that could happen is Tilly totally embarrassing me by going crazy with excitement at seeing so many other dogs... hmm, maybe will have to rethink this!
