   |
|
Poppy went to see the ortho vet today for her monthly check up and we were told that she needs to loose some of her 'puppy fat'...
Being fed raw diet and picking up tips from different members, she has 2 chicken wings or equivalent lamb ribs, etc. for breakfast (yes, sleeping lion - if you read this - now I am the mean one... ). For the afternoon meal she has about 300g meat/offal with veg/fruit (some days) or a tin of oily fish with a cup of wholemeal biscuit and veg/fruit or sometimes cooked chicken (about one breast) with stock and veg + wholemeal biscuit.
She will have some treats (max. 10 coachies/little liver chunks/cheese per day, but sometimes less).
What shall I cut out?
Does this sound like a lot of food per day?
Any advice will be appreciated...

Ok Dorota, the equivalent for our girls is this:
250g blended veggies and either 2 chick wings or equivalent lamb ribs for breakfast
Tea is about 250g offal, or tinned fish with either cottage cheese, raw egg or left overs.
We don't have any need for fillers, and if your girl doesn't have full exercise then she won't need them either I'm guessing? Treats form part of this diet, not extra - now you know how mean I really am

Oh dear, I have to review Poppy's menu...
Joanne - Thank you for your advice...
Poppy will not eat veg on their own for breakfast (so will just have chicken wings separately)... She gets veg only with an evening meal...
The wholemeal biscuit (Natural Choice Wholebake biscuit with herbs) I do not use as a filler, but was recomended it as a valuable component of the diet... She has it only 2/3 times a week...
Poppy is on 1 hr walks a day plus her physio exercises, so she has picked up on the exercise...
I will just reduce everything a little (or more that a little)...

Have you tried stirring in olive oil? This is how we get Chloe to eat her veggies, doesn't take much but obviously makes it appetising.

Tilly's daily menu is as follows:
Breakfast: 1/2lb minced meat, we buy packets from our pet shop, things like beef and heart, chicken and liver, rabbit, lamb, tripe. About twice a week she has a small tin of fish instead.
With this she has 2 ice cubes of pureed veg (defrosted) and about 2oz of a meal mixer thing. Twice a week a raw egg as well.
Evening meal: 3 chicken wings, 2 drumsticks or 1 thigh or equivalent lamb bone, about 7oz.
Occasionally she has 2 bone meals a day (then I make sure she has offal the next day).
She also has rawhides about 4 times a week and a Kong with banana, meat (forthglade natural menu which she was on before we moved her onto raw) or leftover veg about 4 times a week.
I was actually a bit concerned that we weren't feeding her enough, reading other posts on here it seems that some people feed their dogs chicken quarters or half rabbits which must weigh a lot more than what Tilly is getting. At the moment she is definitely on the slender side and is only having about 30 minutes exercise a day as she is 6.5 months. But it seems that others are having the same amount/less than her so maybe we're not starving her!
Sorry, have realised that this probably isn't at all helpful! But I don't think it sounds like a lot and I can't really think of anything you could cut out. Possibly replace treats with raw veg although if she won't eat it on its on she probably won't as treats. And perhaps reduce her evening meat/offal to 200/250 grams. But if she's only just gone up to an hour total walks in the last few weeks it may be that she will gradually start to lose a few pounds over the next few weeks. You may find that things might change when Maya arrives anyway, having the disruption of a new face in the household. Just out of interest, approximately how much does Poppy weigh?

Thank you Soph... Your post is very helpful...
Poppy is 11 months, 23 inches at withers and weighs 27 kg...
This is the photo I took today... She is a bit 'fluffy' as just been for hydrotherapy... (excuse my wall but the workers are coming to fit the skirting board just tonight... in time for Maya's home coming tomorrow...)
Hmmm... maybe a little weight could come of her...
I will do as you suggest and cut the meat to 250g initially... and see what happens, with the increased exercise it should be fine...
Thank you again...

If Poppy is a few kg 'overweight', she is carrying it well I think! She looks in fine shape to me
