Hi all, I am new to the forum and wonder if someone can help me with some info about my labrador's relatives, I don't want to breed him but would like to know more about his heritage. He has alot of Drakeshead in his line which I have managed to find more about, his grandparents were Ben of Mallowdale/Stanthorn Cassie & Dykraw Bruno and Blackstar Sweep who I don't know anything about. The names Tibea, Abbotts, Palgrave, Swinbrook, Leacross Rinkals, Sandringham, Carlyvale and Holdgate make up the rest of the majority of his line - any help with information about these would be much appreciated.
Thank you
John w is your man for this job he is great at knowing pedigrees hope he sees this thread a lot of your lines Tibea ,Palgrave,Swinbrook are in my Labs pedigree would you be able to sent me a p.m as i am too very interested in my Labs pedigree
Thanks

Right, lets see. You know about the Drakeshead dogs. John Halstead and his wife Sandra are possibly the best known and most successful working Labrador breeders in the world! As a friend of mine said to me just the other day, “John Halstead could probably take a Jack Russell and work it up to Field Trials standard!"
Ben of Mallowdale was by Swinbrook Twig out of Ann of Cleary. Twig is by John Halstead’s dogs out of Palgrave lines. Of interest is, following the Drakeshead dogs back, Twig’s sire was D. Actor of Shotgate who’s dam was Westead Tan of D. who’s sire was that famous dog Swinbrook Tan. On the other side, Ann of Cleary’s sire was Leacross Rinkals who’s sire was, none other but Swinbrook Tan again! A nice bit of line breeding! Looking at Ann of C.’s Dam line, her dam was Derramore Thatch who’s sire was Derryboy Daniel who’s sire was Holdgate Willie. Leacross Rinkals dam was Holdgate Swallow who’s sire was Holdgate Willie again! (Who says all working dogs are outcrosses?)
Sandringham as you probably know is the affix of HM. The Queen. Interestingly, the Halsteads brought litter mates, John brought the dog, Westead Shot of Drakeshead and Sandra brought his litter sister, Westread Tan of Drakeshead. Shot went on to win the 1979 IGL Retriever Championship, the highest working award! Holdgate Willie had previously won the championship in 1971! Ann of Cleary was I believe litter sister to Marie of Cleary who won the championship in 1983! Some lovely workers!
Show people will in all possibilities have never heard of most of these dogs. (With the possible exception of Swinbrook Tan) But these dogs are just as famous as Sandylands Tan, Follytowers Merrybrook Black Stormer and the like of the show world. It just goes to show how far the working lines have split from the show side!
I find this really interesting - I was looking at Dan's pedigree the other night and he has Drakeshead and Swinbrook (could be Twig - can't remember) in his as well. If I put some names on the board when I fish them out tonight, could you put your anorak on again for me John?
From all this information, it seems that most of the black labs from working lines are all related in some way. Inevitable I guess. Just like all thoroughbreds go back to the godolphin arab.
