Hi, we have a gorgeous 14 week old black lab called Moss. He is pretty well behaved (well most of the time), but we have an issue with him barking very early in the morning. From 3 days of having him, he was happy to sleep on his own without any crying which is great. However, he goes to bed about 11pm (in our utility room) but then at 6am he is barking and scratching the door to get out. He continues this until he has dragged one of us out of bed to let him out of the room to feed him.
Someone suggested that we should not reward the barking by going to him, but he is so loud I am worried about upsetting the neighbours. Does anyone have any advice? Unfortunately he still isn't toilet trained at night, so we have to have him restricted to the one room still. Any advice would be great. Smile

I think he's doing very well for a baby, he probably does need to be out by then, and if he's toileted inside he'll want to get away from it. If not, and he's asking to go outside that's brilliant!
We are up at 5:30am at the latest every morning anyway, so you're getting a lie in compared to me, I'm jealous!

Thats a long time he is being quiet for. Puppies get lonely when their on their own, but i dont think he is attention seeking, he is probably needing the toliet, or his breakfast. What time is his last meal? Rico is 14weeks today and wakes up early too and barks or cries but thats part and parcel of having a pup, i expected this before getting him and knew my long lies were a thing of the past.

6am is a reasonable time for a pup that age... you could try and just take him out to do his business then bring him back in without any fuss, no cuddles not eye contact etc and then shut him back in and go back to bed.

It might buy you an hour or two more in bed!

The other thing ... as Lindsay says... he might well be hungry. I'm sure at that age, we were still feeding late... like 8.30, 9 pm and then making sure he pooped before bed.

I am pretty lucky... my pup just doesn't fuss to get up in the morning.

Puppies don't do lay-in's.....Well none of mine have anyway. Wink

Seriously....If you want to break the habit, then you will have to start getting up before he starts barking for a while, as at the moment he is perfecting his "Owner Recall".....Also don't feed him as soon as you go down, give it 20-30 mins at least, as otherwise he is just calling for his brekkie. Wink

I would seriously think about crating him too. Not only will this teach him to hold himself all night, when he hits the chew EVERYTHING stage at around 6 months old, you could regret not crating him sooner. Wink
